Human rights are moral principles or norms that describe certain standards of human behaviour, and are regularly protected as legal rights in municipal and international law. They are commonly understood as inalienable fundamental rights "to which a person is inherently entitled simply because she or he is a human being," and which are "inherent in all human beings" regardless of their nation, location, language, religion, ethnic origin or any other status.
2020.10.26 07:22 whatupmynigg4 Do foreigners (from LATAM) stand out when it comes to dating in other LATAM countries?
For example: if you're a guy or girl from Brazil in Argentina, would you get more attention from other people in terms of dating? Does that seem to be an advantage?
I've always seen Brazilian men standing out with American girls at bars or clubs here in the United States. I feel like a lot of American girls like Latin American guys (guys love LATAM girls too) so I wonder if people in LATAM romanticize others from the region?

2020.10.26 02:58 AustralianChrono Virtual Drag Race REWIND! Season 3: Episode 1- Ru's Mad Opening Part 1
Season 2 was a wild season. But... the fun is just beginning. I've scoured the world to find... Someone fierce. Fabulous. And we're opening the doors... and it's time for KINGS! Say Hello to the Monarch's of Season 3!
Barbara enters the Werkroom first. Padded, cinched, and Blessed with Big hair. Dressed in a Pink Chanel ... Seeming Suit
, Barbara smiles as she quickly does a costume change into another look. "Ooooh, I WISH Someone got to see that!" Barbara: "The name is Barbara. I am a performer, and I do looks. I am a.. seamstress, as you can probably tell. I mean... look at my suit. I am a Queen who loves to maintain her thick and juicy figure whilst serving looks that have allllll kinds of references. I am laser-focused with one goal: The Crown." Barbara laughs. "Oops."
"The Chameleon is here." In walks, the reptilian Priscilla Blac, dressed like a (literal) chameleon. This Queen looks edgy, with a lot of high-fashion polish mixed in.
"Oooh, giiiiirl spooky is here." Barbara winces. Priscilla Blac: "I am Priscilla Blac from the legendary house of Blac. I am a Drag Chameleon- ever changing an diverse. I would like to say I am a fashion Queen, who has an alternative flair. I live for performing and being quick on my feet. Some people look at me and say... 'Oh she does Spooky Drag' but I do so much more."
"What's up BITCHESSSSSSSSS!" Xyla Phone walks in looking grungy. She shrugs. "HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII EVERYONE!" Xyla Phone: SO MY NAME IS XYLA. I feel like putting on a look like this is kinda like, the ultimate surprise because bitch, I am look like a mess, and I am totally a mess, but I do so much more. I am a sewer, I am a comedian, I am a campy Queen who is incredibly flexible- Call me boys- and I am here to prove you don't need to be a polished to win. Did I mention I love to talk? YES YES YES!"
"Gasp! She's HERE! Everybody Run!" Milkiwayne Galore enters the building dressed like a broadway dame. With a unique mug and lots of glamour, this is one Musical Queen.
"Oh Heeeeeelooooooo Broadway!" Xyla yells. Milkiwayne Galore: "I am Milkiwayne. I'm here to have the track record Janelle Fatale deserved. I am known in New York for my legendary theatrical taaaaalents, in and out of Drag. I want to be the Queen who wins the Musical Challenge and doesn't get eliminated two episodes later.. Instead, she takes her to the top."
In Snake Couture, Regina Serpentine enters the building. "Shhhhhhhh.... you'll be eaten." Regina Serpentine: "Regina. Latin for Queen. Serpentine... Snakes devour their prey. I am Regina Serpentine. I am known for my legendary sewing skills, my ability to give the most powerful lip syncs in your life, and a determination you have no idea. I do harsh, worldly drag- Jagged Edges. Inspired by Fierce Supermodels. I am here to EAT up this competition."
"Oooh Miss Priscilla, She done steal your look!" Xyla laughs.
Regina and Priscilla both lock eyes.
"Try not to steal the look." Regina smiles as she looks at Priscilla.
"Never. I don't steal things that look worse." Priscilla purses her lips.
"London Bridges falling dooooown!" London death drops as she arrives. This Queen looks like the definition of FUN. She's super cute and pretty, draped in... a bit of a messy look. London Bridges: "Hi, My Name is London. This... is my first time taking a plane out of my state. Back home, I am known for my comedic lip syncs and when I siiiiiiiiiiiiing! I am a bit younger then these girls, but it doesn't mean I don't have the experience. I am gonna surprise you, I am telling you!"
"The Noble Brother's here." In walks Elias: A Vampiric Looking Drag King who looks much like a demonic overlord. It's immediately clear- this is someone who is very different. But somehow... similar....
"A DRAG KING?!" Xyla gasps.
"Fuck yes, a Drag King." Priscilla grins. Elias: "My Name is Elias. I'm from the same legendary family as the Winner of Last Season, Claudette. Last season, she broke a barrier for the trans women. Now, I do the same for Drag Kings. I would describe myself High Horror Glam. However, unlike my mother who was the more sensual side of spectrum, I am a high-energy performer who likes to go absolutely psychotic." Elias glasses fall off his face. "And... I'm a bit of a dork. Whoopsie." Elias giggles. YOU'VE GOT RU-MAIL!
"Waaaaaait WHAT?" Xyla yells.
"Oh baby not a twist already..." Barbara gasps. Hello Hello Hello! Welcome to the season. Last time around, we had 14 amazing Queens... and not everyone got to shine. To make things... a bit clearer, we will be SPLITTING this premiere...and opening the gates to all kind of Drag Performers. This week, I'll be throwing you all in the deep end to prove yourself. The 7 of you will host your own Drag Brunch at a Local Club, and create your own signature dish to be served alongside this brunch with it. One person will go home... before you even get to meet the other 7. Barbara: "I'm gasping." Barbara looks shook. "A twist?! Already?!" Milkiwayne Galore: "Oh yes! I love to host my own nights back home. I know what I am doing in this today, and I know I am going to win this.
As they get ready, Milkiwayne chats with Barbara.
"Now, Miss Barbara.." Milkiwayne smiles. "How'd you get into drag?"
"Well, I funnily enough... had a bit of an opposing reaction then a lot my sisters in drag. I... transitioned at 19." Barbara smiles.
"Oh, I didn't realise." Milkiwayne looks at Barbara.
"I was quite well into my transition, studying at art school when I found Drag. The art of performing, of... the beauty, the acceleration of my femininity..." Barba grins. "I found it."
"I love drag because it does change you, regardless of what you identify as. You can be male, you can be female, but what's important... it the power of drag." Milkiwayne exhales. "I love being a man, and I love being a woman. Drag transforms me.."
"And for me, it kinda... accelerates me, my form.." Barbara laughs. "Like a sailor moon transformation."
"Drag can be anything." Milkiwayne nods. "No matter what... it is powerful, and we are powerful."
"Agreed." Barbara nods. "Some of the strongest in the world."
The Monarch's host their shows and present their signature dishes:
Elias: "I immediately feel like I am being looked at a microscope by these other Drag Performers. I immediately put myself into high gear. I am going to sell this first episode and prove myself."
- Barbara: The Thick and Juicy Big Breakfast
- Priscilla Blac: The Snakes Bacon and Eggs
- Xyla Phone: Smells Like Sweets and Spirits
- Milkiwayne Galore: The Diva's Diet-free Pancakes
- Regina Serpentine: The Queens AIIIIIIIICCCCCEEEEE Bowl
- London Bridges: A Britsh Breakfast (Made by a non-british Queen)
- Elias: Elias' Devilish Blood Orange Brunch Best
The Contestants then walk the Runway showing off "Reveals!"
~ All 7 of you are incredible hosts, and I am overjoyed to see this first bunch of Queens. Unfortunately... One of you will be going home tonight. London Bridges, this week... You didn't do bad. But... you didn't do good either. You are.. safe. You may get to watch the show. London Bridges: Safe is alllllll ok at this point. Safe means survival another day, and another opportunity to slay." Elias, Xyla Phone, Milkiwayne Galore.... you are the Top 3 of the Week. Milkiwayne Galore: "YES! To get in the Top 3 Week one is an incredible feeling. I've never felt more happy starting off like this." Milkiwayne... Well done, you are safe. Elias... Boy, you did your Mama PROUD! Condragulations, you are the winner of this weeks challenge! Elias: "I am overjoyed. I have started off this season with a win. If I go home now- I have already proven that Drag Kings are fucking fierce! Though... let's not go home please." Elias laughs. Xyla Phone, you are one crazy, campy Queen and we are loving it. You're safe. Xyla Phone: OH my GOOOOOOSH. Top 3. Week 1. AHHHHHHHHHHHH this is amazing. This is so fantastic. I am like woah. FUUUUUUUUUUUU yes! So like-" Xyla's confessional is fastforwarded. A LOT of talking seems to be happening. "And yeah, that's why I am like, so happy." Unfortunately... This Means Barbara, Priscilla Blac, Regina Serpentine... you are the weakest of the week. However... Barbara, you are saved from a Phenomenal Runway this week. You are... Top Toot.. and Safe. Barbara: "This week was a bit of good and bit of bad. I think I was a bit shaken by this big twist... but I know I'm going to beef it up. Barbara is here to stay." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HDEHj2yzew
London gasps. "The two reptilic Queens in the bottom two... OMG." she whispers to Xyla.
"I KNOOOOOOOW!!!" Xyla responds... quite unsubtle in her loudness. This Means... Regina Serpentine and Priscilla Blac, you are the bottom two of the week. You will both be lip syncing to PHYSICAL, By Dua Lipa... and one of you will survive. Good Luck... and Don't fuck it up. Regina Serpentine: "To be here Week 1 was nothing I expected. However... I feel like I'm at the perfect opportunity to prove my skills. I'm here against a lesser Queen, someone who dissed me as I entered the Werkroom... and now I'll get to watch her sashay away." Priscilla Blac: "I am not letting the house of Blac go home first. This isn't the kinda song i'd normally do, but if i am one thing, it's quick on my feet and ready to change my persona accordingly. I am the chameleon, and you're going to see this happen on stage, right now."
The Queens put their heart into this lip sync. Regina gives reveals, backbends, splits, and all kinds of twists. Priscilla does the same, taking off her helm to reveal snakeskin makeup underneath. Both of them work, WORK, and dance... and it's fantastic. By the end of it, both of them are destroyed. They walk over to each other, and hold hands. A sisterhood has been formed in this one moment. Wow. Wow Wow Wow. I... Amazing Job Queens... I want to say both of you brought the fire this week. Shantay... You both Stay!
All 7 Queens are SHOOK. Xyla Phone: "For this to happen episode one... fuck. I can not BELIEVE." Now, let the music play!
The Queens enter the Werkroom.
"What a gag, Hey?" Priscilla grins.
"I just want to say Priscilla- I am sorry for all that nonsense. I feel like tonight we've both proven we're strong ass Queens." Regina hugs Priscilla tightly.
"I just have to say, you two... are lip sync assassins. Both of you did amazing." Barbara smiles.
"And Elias..." Milkiwayne nods. "Condragulations, doll..."
"It feels fantastic to win this challenge." Elias sighs. "I had this fear that I would come here, be the first out, and... there'd never be a king here again. But now... I have hope. I can do this." Elias smiles.
"I think all of us are so fierce!" London laughs. "I know there's 7 more... but gosh, I hope we're the top 7."
"Me too..." Priscilla smiles.
"Let's make a pact. Us 7... are the Top 7!" Xyla yells.
"TOP 7!" The Monarch's all put their hands in.
"Now let's trash this place for those other Queens!" London laughs.

2020.10.23 23:09 Yorutoki [Lore Speculation] Teyvat and Tarot
An analysis of the Genshin main story, through the lens of the fool's journey of tarot.
This essay is heavily based on http://www.learntarot.com/journey.htm
Any text in italics is a direct quote from another website. Websites other than the above link will be sourced.
MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD, this will talk about all of the main story available in version 1.0.
THIS IS PURE THEORYCRAFTING, I don't claim that Genshin plot actually has to do with tarot, this is just a fun thing to think about!
(Hopefully the formatting works, I'm pasting this in from google docs)
0 - The Fool https://preview.redd.it/qddh60cpswu51.png?width=2000&format=png&auto=webp&s=5f8566e6de0047afd09fe07740c7bdaf4a4e7d2d We begin with the Fool (0), a card of beginnings. The Fool stands for each of us as we begin our journey of life. He is a fool because only a simple soul has the innocent faith to undertake such a journey with all its hazards and pain. At the start of his trip, the Fool is a newborn - fresh, open and spontaneous. The figure on Card 0 has his arms flung wide, and his head held high. He is ready to embrace whatever comes his way, but he is also oblivious to the cliff edge he is about to cross. The Fool is unaware of the hardships he will face as he ventures out to learn the lessons of the world.
With this in mind, it’s only appropriate that we start the game on a beach surrounded by cliffs, and we’re introduced to the vast world of Teyvat in one of the most breathtaking scenes in the game - on a cliff.
(My other favorite scenes are Stormterror flying overhead shortly after this and the first time you see Liyue Harbor)
https://preview.redd.it/yzsq80zsswu51.png?width=1366&format=png&auto=webp&s=c79b97def1413ec3aae12ac2bf02514a02fc1429 The Fool stands somewhat outside the rest of the major arcana. Zero is an unusual number. It rests in the exact middle of the number system - poised between the positive and negative. At birth, the Fool is set in the middle of his own individual universe. He is strangely empty (as is zero), but imbued with a desire to go forth and learn. This undertaking would seem to be folly, but is it?
This corresponds nicely to the Traveler losing their powers and starting their adventure as a blank slate - but that’s not who I think the Fool is.
I believe the Fool is you, the player, the real person playing the game. You are a zero, foreign to the conventional numerical system that starts at one, here to experience this world.
1 - The Magician https://preview.redd.it/40y1znhuswu51.png?width=2000&format=png&auto=webp&s=1eea71d0f44bd03c53d2ea172e56ca942980c3e6 On setting out, the Fool immediately encounters the Magician (1) and the High Priestess (2) - the great balancing forces that make up the perceived world. It is a feature of the material universe that as soon as we name some aspect of experience, we automatically evoke its opposite. The Magician is the positive side. He represents the active, masculine power of creative impulse. He is also our conscious awareness. The Magician is the force that allows us to impact the world through a concentration of individual will and power.
I’ll admit, the Fool being the player was a bit of a cop out because I liked the idea I had for the Magician and High Priestess.
The Magician is whichever sibling the player has chosen. The “canon” sibling seems to be the boy, evident in the promotional videos, which works with the Magician being the “masculine” to the High Priestess’ “feminine”.
(Personal opinion, I also think the girl makes a better “villain” than the boy) With his arms stretched diagonally, his body acts out the connection between divine inspiration and the physical world, or earth. Without him there would be nothing to link the two. - Incandescent Tarot
The Traveler, as the avatar of the player, bridges “divine inspiration” (the player) and the world of Teyvat. What makes the Magician so powerful? First, he is not afraid to act. He believes in himself and is willing to put that belief on the line. He also knows what he intends to do and why.
This fits nicely with the choices the Traveler makes, throwing themself into danger. As for what they intend to do and why, I have no clue but they do seem like they know.
2 - The High Priestess https://preview.redd.it/4543g0ovswu51.png?width=2000&format=png&auto=webp&s=34d5cbd3b75a4fd4aa67fe7ed3115a50faffe4d5 The High Priestess is the negative side. She is the mysterious unconscious. She provides the fertile ground in which creative events occur. The High Priestess is our unrealized potential waiting for an active principle to bring it to expression. The terms positive and negative do not imply "good" and "bad." These are human distinctions that do not apply in the tarot. The Magician and the High Priestess are absolutely equal in value and importance. Each is necessary for balance. We may view the negative as our Shadow, but without shadows, we cannot see the light, and without a ground of potential, we cannot create.
The High Priestess is the Traveler’s sibling. They are mysterious, for we get mere glimpses into their activities and motives. They are the ground of potential for the Traveler’s creativity, the driving force behind the Traveler. The High Priestess is the guardian of the unconscious. She sits in front of the thin veil of unawareness which is all that separates us from our inner landscape. She contains within herself the secrets of these realms and offers us the silent invitation, "Be still and know that I am God."
We don’t know much about the Traveler’s sibling, but they certainly seem to hold the secrets of the world, what with the theory that the sibling has been in Teyvat for 500 years prior to the Traveler.
I’ll admit (again) that this role could also be Paimon or the Unknown God, considering we know nothing about any of these three, which I think is very fitting for the High Priestess.
3 - The Empress https://preview.redd.it/o6741at3twu51.png?width=2000&format=png&auto=webp&s=ba97b49bf9d798d061cdd50e9d4a5f6408a5b737 As he grows, the Fool becomes more and more aware of his surroundings. He comes to know Mother Earth, who nurtures him in a larger sense. The Empress (3) represents the fertile, life-giving Mother who reigns over the bounty of nature and the rhythms of the Earth. The Empress encourages you to strengthen your connections with the natural world which is the ground of our being. Too often false sophistications and pleasures take us far from our roots. Let the Empress remind you to keep your feet firmly planted in the Earth.
The Empress is the Anemo Archon, Venti. Clad in green, with a flower on his hat and a song in the wind, symbolised by birds and feathers, there’s no one more fitting for the role of “Mother Earth” (Except maybe the Dendro Archon, but considering Sumeru seems to be a desert…)
It’s tempting to think Venti is someone you meet later on, but he really is the first character you meet in Teyvat - right after obtaining Anemo power from the statue, you go to the woods to see Venti talking to Stormterror. Her face appears relaxed and welcoming. She has none of the stern energy of The Emperor, and yet she does not seem like someone weak or easily swayed. The Empress does not need a grand castle to symbolize her power. By placing herself amongst nature, she symbolizes a worldview where we are a part of the world and supported by it. - Incandescent Tarot
Mondstadt is surrounded by nature, much more so than Liyue. In contrast to Liyue’s deliberate flowerbeds and cultivated glaze lilies, foliage and mushrooms decorate the walls of Mondstadt’s houses, the symbol of Mondstadt’s hero being a tree as well. Even in his absence, Venti exists in Mondstadt as a giant statue, arguably the centerpiece of the city. Liyue lacks such a symbol of their god, but perhaps it’s because theirs is not an absentee archon…
(I just wanted a big statue of Zhongli so that I can sit in his lap)
4 - The Emperor https://preview.redd.it/xb8ntth4twu51.png?width=2000&format=png&auto=webp&s=f1bdb0f4a1adc5fe38f6fb320afb356fca13adae The Emperor (4) is the representative of structure and authority. The Fool encounters rules. He learns that his will is not always paramount and there are certain behaviors necessary for his well-being. There are people in authority who will enforce such guidelines.
The Emperor is the Geo Archon, Zhongli. The God of Contracts, naturally, governs rules. Without order, there cannot be commerce.
The Millelith are no pushovers either, as opposed to Mondstadt’s knights. First contact with them is at Rex Lapis’ “assassination”, marching in like a proper military. Another interesting read is this theory about Childish Jiang’s parents by IME315
(Sidetrack about the Millelith, they are 千岩军 in Chinese, lit. “thousand stone army”. I presume “Millelith” combines “mille” which is “thousand” in Latin and “lithos” which is “stone” in Greek) The figure of the Emperor says much about the essential qualities of this card. We see a stern, commanding figure seated on a stone-slab throne.
While we don’t actually encounter Zhongli in person until late in the current main story, we meet his statues first - and his statue does resemble the Emperor card a lot: a cloaked figure on a stone throne, holding his object(s) of power. Zhongli also looks much more stern than Venti, the owner of a funeral parlour with a cold expression. The Emperor is all about rationality, rules, and definable concepts. This card suggests that rules require certainty and a lack of nuance in order to function. That is, we have to make straight lines out of the many curves if we want to bring order to the world. Like all cards, the meaning we take from The Emperor depends on context. He can either represent the benefits or rules and order or their downsides. - Incandescent Tarot The God of Contracts, senselessly slaughtered as his people watched on in horror. In the end, he will sign the contract to end all contracts. - Storyline preview video
This could imply evoking the reversed Emperor as well, the downsides of such order.
I find it interesting that Venti's statue holds an orb, while Zhongli’s statue holds a cube. Both elements are very similar as supports, yet Anemo’s flexibility amplifying other elements contrasts with the rock solid defense of Geo, creating shields that only affect you. I’m curious what shapes the other elements will be represented by.
5 - The Hierophant https://preview.redd.it/1rl1gk67twu51.png?width=2000&format=png&auto=webp&s=529be8b7e2271de308b0e2c08cf2b93be7e9f4ca Eventually, the Fool ventures out of his home into the wider world. The Hierophant (5) represents the organized belief systems that begin to surround and inform the growing child. A Hierophant is someone who interprets arcane knowledge and mysteries.
The Hierophant is Ningguang (though it could be any of the Qixing, but we don’t know much about the rest.) She is our first look into a country actively ruled by its god. As if she herself were a god, she is worshipped by the people, blessed by a higher power (the Geo Archon) and owns a floating palace, like an off-brand Celestia. Classic case of hubris if I’ve seen one.
She is the Hierophant, interpreter of the divine, the one conducting the Rite of Descension. Besides churches, there are schools, clubs, teams, companies, and societies. The Hierophant represents all of these because his realm is structured groups with rules and assigned roles. Such environments emphasize belief systems - facts, rules, procedures, and ritual. Members are rewarded for following conventions.
Reinforcer of the Emperor, the Hierophant enforces the social classes of Liyue.
Liyue is clearly segmented - the temple conducting the Rite of Descension at the highest point, followed by the Qixing’s pavilion and upper class residences, then the middle class, consisting of the bank, jewelers and merchants, and lastly the lower class, with buildings and streets significantly worse for wear, along with the docks and shipyard. In readings, the Hierophant often represents learning with experts or knowledgeable teachers. This card also stands for institutions and their values.
At the end of the current main story, we’re invited to Ningguang’s Jade Palace; perhaps we’ll learn something there.
6 - The Lovers https://preview.redd.it/fzhvj5b8twu51.png?width=2000&format=png&auto=webp&s=b68d0f284bdde547366d8c4398586edb66961292 The Lovers (6) symbolises the balancing tendency. The Fool also needs to decide upon his own beliefs. It is well enough to conform while he learns and grows, but at some point, he must determine his own values if he is to be true to himself. He must start to question received opinion.
The writing in Genshin is chock full of moral dilemmas and irony, which I love. The dragon of Mondstadt attacks the city it was supposed to protect, and the adepti of Liyue speak of quashing the city they govern. Your last adversary in Mondstadt is a Fatui Harbinger, and the first to lend a hand in Liyue is her colleague. If it’s true that the Seven ruthlessly slaughtered the old gods in the Archon War, are we on the wrong side of history, are we the bad guys for opposing the Traveler’s sibling? What of the Lord of Storms, Decarabian; surely Venti was justified in defeating him?
What of Ningguang; she first antagonises us, albeit not specifically us, and suddenly she invites us to have a friendly chit chat?
What of Childe; he seems to be on our side, but what is he plotting behind the scenes, are all the Fatui scum after all?
And speaking of Childe, he is the Lovers. Tartaglia is usually classed as one of the group of old characters (vecchio) who appears in many scenarios as one of the lovers (innamorati). - Wikipedia
In case you didn’t know, the Fatui Harbingers owe their names to the Italian Commedia Dell’Arte
Childe’s actual name is Tartaglia. This post by Ellie_0_o
goes more in depth into Childe and the role of Tartaglia. The Lovers shows us what happens when we join complementary elements in a union. We don’t have to limit ourselves to romance – we are dealing with the realm of symbols here, and in tarot The Lovers can refer to any joining of forces. - Incandescent Tarot
This fits, with the Traveler and Childe joining forces to find out the Qixing’s secrets.
Wild speculation about the future
The Chariot (7) and Strength (8) could easily fit into Inazuma, Strength possibly being the Electro Archon. The Hermit (9) suits both Inazuma and Sumeru. I see the Wheel of Fortune (10) being the Dendro Archon, the God of Wisdom, as well as Justice (11) being the Hydro Archon, the God of Justice. (In fact these last two and Tartaglia are what convinced me maybe there's something to this crazy theory)
Beyond that, I really have nothing to go off of. (As if I had anything to go off of for these 9 pages kekw)
Thank you for reading this, I’d like to also thank everyone who makes lore posts about Genshin on the subreddit and forum!

2020.10.16 01:38 Nonstopas Throwback Write-Up #23: Eminem - Relapse
Streaming: Spotify Apple Music Tidal Album Background: The years before Relapse It’s 2009.
Lil Wayne and Cash Money associates such as Drake and Nicki Minaj are starting their rise to fame. The number 1 most rated album that year was Only Built For Cuban Linx pt. 2
and hip-hop as a genre was definitely at a standstill in terms of new genre and uniqueness.
It’s been 5 years since the last studio album from Eminem. Encore, his last studio album released in 2004 didn’t do as well as the previous album, an all-time classic: The Eminem Show. Relapse was met with generally negative to mixed reviews, even considered a slump, and a fall off for Eminem. Encore was just a glimpse of what’s yet to come. Tracks like Fack from Curtain Call:The Hits, as well as the leaks that were recorded during the hiatus, which were meant to be included in his final studio album King Mathers, did not show anything promising at all. In those 5 years leading up to Relapse, Eminem was perhaps in the real rock bottom of his career and personal life. Marshall, unarguably fell-off from the all-time highs of his career as an artist, his music was starting to lose momentum, his drug addiction was entering the dangerous territory, and the worst hit came from his friend Proof being shot outside an after-hours club in Detroit. Eminem also had a 2nd divorce with his wife Kim after being re-married for only eleven weeks. Eminem is not an ordinary rapper. He is a man who became a hip-hop legend in just short 5 years with one of the un-deniably greatest peaks in hip-hop history. It seemed like it was the end of the story of the hip-hop behemoth Slim Shady, as everything in his life and career was falling down like rubble of an empire that once was.
Yet it wasn’t the end. Introduction: The comeback of Slim Shady
After completing one of several attempted 12-step programs to control his drug abuse, Eminem began recording major parts of Relapse in late 2007 to early 2009, with Beautiful being the only exception, which was also the only song recorded before he became sober, and later on was finished with an added verse after he became clean for drugs, that was a small hint of optimism in an otherwise depressing song.
In 2009 the first official single of Relapse hit the radio. We Made You was in the list of fun/goofysingles that we got from Eminem even before the hiatus, such as: Without Me, The Real Slim Shady, My Name Is and Just Lose It. And it did succeed in a way, but the single did not really give us an idea of what Relapse will truly be, apart from the small glimpse of the accents, but I believe nobody really paid attention to that as the song was meant to be a tongue in cheek and more on the fun side, just like the songs that came in the earlier years as mentioned before.
Throughout the years the album has received a lot of slack. And some of it is very obvious why. The accents. The number one problem stated by rap critics and listeners is the accents as well as the subject matter. Many people did not like a horror-core album in 2009. However, no one seemed to have a problem about the impeccable production, or about unique flows or the content. It was about the accents. If we look past that, Relapse is probably the most unique album Eminem has ever made. It is almost entirely produced by Dr.Dre, a long-time partner-in-crime, something that we never heard before or since Relapse. It is the main reason why musically it is just magnificent.
Back in 2008, Dre was still working on Detox, and compared to his output musically now, his production was still not as dated and sounded great and somewhat fresh, and exactly what Eminem needed during this time of his life. A dear friend, a producer with whom he had great chemistry and who understood Eminem’s recording process. I personally, cannot think of a single song which had a bad production on this album and it shows Dre's longevity in the game, and how well it ages. It is also quite consistent because of the reoccurring serial-killer and drug abuse/relapse theme.
10 years later, I find myself returning to the album quite often, as it is a gold mine for underrated Eminem songs, and lines that slid right past me when I was listening to it for the first time.
The aforementioned themes, however, do not make Relapse an easy listen. It’s not something you can put on a warm summer’s day or a cozy winter night. It is not an album you bump with your windows open, and it is not something you listen before sleep. Relapse is something else, completely. It is an album that you put on during a dark, rainy night, when not everything may be going the way you want it to, and when you just want to escape the grim reality, to an even grimier one, where you are not the main character. And that’s why this album resonates so much with me. The dark atmosphere that surrounds Relapse just as it was surrounding Eminem during his darkest of times. When I listen to Relapse I always imagine entering Eminem’s mind during his recovery from drug abuse. Relapse is what nightmares and the fight against addiction sounded and felt like.
This album was necessary for Eminem to not only come back but also to move on forward in his career. He had to get all of that shit that was inside his head out so he could continue where he left off half a decade ago, and even move past it, as said by Eminem himself in an interview: “With this album, the concept of relapse was obviously a double entendre. As in, literally relapsing on drugs and also relapsing back into Shady. I heard a lot of comments when I was away. A lot of people said, “When Em comes back he’s gotta reinvent himself.” I didn’t feel like I needed to reinvent myself. I feel like I needed to just go back to what got me here in the first place: just rapping about the craziest, most outlandish shit.”
In almost 11 years since it was released, Relapse has became some-what a Cult Classic and even considered as one of the best Eminem albums right after the legendary trio of SSLP - MMLP - TES. Favorite track review. Due to time constraints and not to make the write-up too long i decided to cut the full tracklist review into my personal favorite song review.
The album is opened up with a skit. It suggests that Eminem is now clean and struggling the temptations of drugs. Constantly fighting his demons. The opening track 3 A.M is pure horror core. We instantly hear Eminem using his accents. In my opinion the song is good at telling a story and showcasing Em’s new, refurbished flows. But that can be said true about almost any track on the album. However, just like Eminem himself said, 3 AM does indeed depict of what the whole album is about, therefore it is definitely a great opening track, setting the tone to what is yet to come.
You’re walking down the horror corridor.
With the haunting first drum claps and an intense rhyme scheme:
You're walkin' down a horror corridor
It's almost four in the mornin' and you're in a
Nightmare, it's horrible, right there's the coroner
Waiting for ya to turn the corner so he can corner ya
You're a goner, he's onto ya
Out the corner of his cornea, he just saw ya run
All you want is to rest 'cause you can't run anymore, you're done
Eminem greets the listener with an element of surprise that is quite well known for fans, however it was never done in such a distinctive way. Most of Em's albums leading up to Relapse started of with more accessible tracks like My Name Is, Kill You and White America.
If you put yourself in a shoe of a 2009s rap listener, this Eminem is not something you would have expected. The weird accent, the beat and the rhymes are more intense than ever, they might have even been confusing and somewhat disappointing to you at the time, because what we really wanted was that old Eminem over something more innovative.
Eminem starts painting you vivid pictures. If the intro track 3 AM didn’t hook you in, then this track absorbed you into the mind of a twisted drug addict, full of psychotic, dark images. Sometimes it’s tongue in cheek, the bars expressed are dark yet hilariously haunting.
Here, want a snack? You hungry, you fuckin' brat?
Look at that, it's a Xanax, take it and take a nap, eat it
But I don't need it — "Well fuck it then, break it up
Take a little piece and beat it before you wake Nathan up"
Alright Ma, you win, I don't feel like arguin'
I'll do it, pop it, gobble it and start wobblin'
Stumble, hobble, tumble, slip, trip, then I fall in bed
With a bottle of meds and a Heath Ledger bobblehead
One of the most interesting things about this album is how slowly Eminem makes all of the fucked-up shit about his life start sounding normal. A drug addict mother feeding her son valium for breakfast is just the second track of the album, yet we start understanding that this album is going to be something else. After almost 11 years after the release we can start appreciating these songs as sort of a rant to a psychiatrist, where Eminem digs deep into his problems in his early childhood days.
Because my mom loved valium and lots of drugs
Throughout his career Eminem had talked about his problems with his mom, about never having a father, about how he was raised and what it led to. However, he never did it the way he explains it in the song My Mom.
Valium was in everything, food that I ate
The water that I drank, fuckin' peas in my plate
She sprinkled just enough of it to season my steak
So every day I'd have at least three stomachaches
Marshall's relationship with his mother has always been somewhat complicated. He was never afraid to critique his upbringing, but the song really show's us how fucked up his childhood was. I think one of the reasons why I find the song My Mom so interesting is because how effortlessly and somewhat relaxed he's telling all of this traumatic shit. But at the same time, that was always the appeal of Eminem: the ability to express things that others were too afraid to say, in ways that others have never done before.
You can be a permanent fixture in my lyrical mixture
As bagpipes start blowing and quite possibly the hardest hitting beat on the album starts, we get a little taste of the classic Eminem back on Bagpipes from Baghdad
Locked in Mariah's wine cellar, all I had for lunch
Was bread, wine, more bread, wine and Captain Crunch
Red wine for breakfast and for brunch
And to soak it up, an in-between snack, crackers to munch
Mariah, what ever happened to us?
Why did we have to break up?
All I asked for was a glass of punch
You see, I never really asked for much
I can't imagine what's going through your mind after such
A nasty break-up with that Latin hunk
Luis Miguel, Nick Cannon better back the fuck up
I'm not playin', I want her back, you punk
This is Hello Kitty bedspread, Satin Funk
Mixed with Egyptian, with a little rap and punk
Zapp and Eric Clapton, Shaft, Frank Zappa, crunk
And yeah baby, I want another crack at ya
You can beat me with any spatula that you want
I mean, I really want you bad, you cunt
Nick, you had your fun, I've come to kick you in your sack of junk
Man, I could use a fresh batch of blood
So prepare your vernacular for Dracula acupuncture
The song Bagpipes from Baghdad was the start of Nick Cannon – Mariah Carey - Eminem beef triangle. Eminem has not had many great attempts at his career as an MC, many of the shots taken at him back in the day failed to even hit the target, but It definitely seems like the most fun he has had was with the Mariah Carey beef. On this song Eminem managed to throw a few shots at both Nick and Marriah, that later led to the classic diss track The Warning, which also happened after Mariah dropped a video with Eminem diss. I think that this song was one of the few instances in this album where we had a glimpse of the old Em with a twist of what is yet to come. Yet to this day, the track feels somewhat fresh, as Eminem's flows used in the album have held on better than his latter works.
Yeah baby, do that dance It's the last dance you'll ever get the chance to do
Same Song and dance may not be a standout track for many, but this song is just a pure example of Eminem’s ability to create vivid stories, that just make you feel uncomfortable. I like this track so much, because it is just a story from a horror movie, except that it all rhymes perfectly. This song is a perfect display of why Em is one of the greatest lyricist of all time. Not many MC's are able to develop a story, full of twists, while almost perfectly rhyming most of the verse.
I was hooked in at the first glimpse of them buns
Seen her backstage, now here's where I come in, son
Look, here she comes, I better pull out the big guns
Hello Lindsay, you're looking a little thin, hun
How 'bout a ride to rehab? Get in, cunt
But starting off on the wrong foot is what I didn't want
Girl, I'm just kidding, let me start over again, hun
See what I meant was, we should have a little intervention
Come with me to Brighton, let me relieve your tension
You little wench, ya, murder wasn't my intention
If I wanted to kill you, it would've already been done
Slowly she gets in and I begin to lynch her
With 66 inches of extension cord
Soon as my flow starts I compose art like the ghost of Mozart
Stay Wide Awake is by far the most complicated, and incredibly song Eminem has ever released. It is a long time fan favorite, and a huge cult-classic behind lots of old listeners. Tyler, The Creator even stated this song as one of his biggest influences on his early style. So what makes Stay Wide Awake so good?
Fe-fi-fo-fum, I think I smell the scent of a placenta
I enter Central Park, it's dark, it's winter in December
I see my target, put my car in park, and approach a tender
Young girl by the name of Brenda, and I pretend to befriend her
Sit down beside her like a spider, hi there girl, you mighta
Heard of me before, see whore, you're the kind of girl that I'd a–
-ssault and rape, then figure why not try to make your pussy wider
Fuck you with an umbrella then open it up while the shit's inside ya
I'm the kind of guy that's mild but I might flip and get a little bit wilder
Impregnate a lesbian, yeah, now let's see her have triplets, and I'll di–
-sintegrate them babies as soon as they're out her with formalde–
-hyde and cyanide, girl, you can try and hide, you can try to scream louder
No need for no gunpowder, that only takes all the fun out of
Murderin', I'd rather go vinn-vinn, and now you see just how the
Fuck I do just what I do when I cut right through your scalp, uhh
Shit, wait a minute, I mean skull, my knife seems dull, pull another one out, uh
The first verse is one of few songs in Eminem catalog that rhymes perfectly, with so many integral rhymes, that also manage to hit the beat at the same time. While doing all of his magic flow rhyming, Eminem also manages to portray yet another horror story, about guess what… Rape and murder! Classic.
Soon as my flow starts I compose art like the ghost of Mozart
Even though they all say that they're real, I know that most aren't
Boy, you think you're clever, don't ya? Girl, you think you're so smart
Come with me to another side in a world so cold and so dark
With the bridge, Eminem fully invites you to join his dark, murdering, raping, screaming, fantasy of an album. We are in for a ride.
Where's the flames there's chronic
Old Times Sake is a really fun track, with Dre and Em going back and forth, well, for Old Time's Sake of course! This track is just generally well made track, i would not necessarily say it is a standout of the album, yet a personal favorite, since it has been so long since we had an Eminem and Dre collab back then and even now. I feel like the song displays both of their personalities and friendship very well.
Mommy, something's wrong with dad i think
Déjà vu perhaps the best of not one of the best songs of the album and overall in Eminems career. Here, he gets a bit more personal, ditches the accents and goes deep inside his battle with addiction, how it affected his family and how the last 5 years before the album felt like. This is Eminem at his most vulnerable, yet the track is what the fans needed very much at the time, to know what exactly went in Eminems life during the time away from fame.
So I take a Vicodin, splash, it hits my stomach, then (Ahhh!)
Couple of weeks go by, it ain't even like I'm gettin' high
Now I need it just not to feel sick, yeah, I'm gettin' by
Wouldn't even be taking this shit if DeShaun didn't die
Oh yeah, there's an excuse; you lose Proof, so you use
There's new rules, it's cool if it's helpin' you to get through
It's twelve-noon, ain't no harm in self-inducin' a snooze
What else is new? Fuck it, what would Elvis do in your shoes?
Now here I am three months later, full-blown relapse
"Just get high until the kids get home from school, homes, relax"
And since I'm convinced that I'm an insomniac
I need these pills to be able to sleep, so I take three naps
Just to be able to function throughout the day, let's see
That's an Ambien each nap, how many Valium? Three?
And that will average out to about one good hour's sleep
Okay, so now ya see the reason how come he
Has taken four years to just put out an album, B
See, me and you, we almost had the same outcome, Heath
'Cause that Christmas, you know the whole pneumonia thing?
It was bologna, was it the methadone, ya think?
Even tough Em did not get rid of accents for this song, his some-what relaxed delivery of these horrible events of his life make the track very hard hitting. It seems like Eminem was at a point in his life where he knew that all the fucked up shit he was doing is not good for him, yet he could not quit it, he simply did not care. And this track is the pre-epitome of what happened during his 2007 OD. Eminem nearly died after taking ‘equivalent of four bags of heroin’ before pal Elton John saved his life.
**Feel your pain, you feel mine
Go inside each other's minds
Just to see what we find
Look at shit through each other's eyes
Perhaps the most normal song, a definite fan favorite, and overall an amazing track, Beautiful, is the only track on the album that was recorded during his hiatus on drugs, and was finished latter on, after becoming sober, and adding a more light-hearted optimistic verse to the album.
Beautiful is a very personal song for Eminem, as many of the songs on this album, yet at the point in time, while listening to this song it felt nice hearing this old Em back, even tough a bit less cocky, funny and crazy than usual.
Paul Wall is dope, and so is Bubba
My Darling is a great song on so many ways, with such a weird off-beat intro to the album, a diss/homage to Paul Wall, and that weird transition. It's quite hard to say what makes this song an interesting listen, but i think it's definitely up there with one of the best Eminem tracks out there.
You remember that night you prayed to God
You'd give anything to get a record deal? Well, Dre signed you
This is what you wanted your whole life, Marshall, right? Ooh
Look at this house, look at these cars: they're so nice, woo!
Oh, but you didn't know fame has a price too?
That you just now seeing the downside to
Lose your best friend from high school, your wife too
Ain't even sure if your kids like you
Come off tour, can't even sleep at night without NyQuil
Become a Valium addict, start a rehab cycle
But together we can break the cycle
Marshall…" — What?! — "No one's gonna love you like I do"
My Darling, the darling means the Slim Shady persona. The song is about a constant battle between the alternate persona that Eminem always showed us throughout his career. During his struggles and controversy it used to be that it's "Slim Shady who said that!" and the more political stuff was more out character. It's funny to look at Eminem and his career as a separation between 3 different personas, and in the earlier albums it used to be very clear when and what persona is used. Personal is Marshal himself, political is Eminem, and Bat-shit insane is Slim Shady. Yet this song shows an example that really, as it should be, there is no difference, it's all Eminem. Conclusion
The 6th studio album by Eminem is perhaps the most controversial in terms of general opinion. At first it was greeted as a return of Slim Shady, but later people realised that one thing they don’t like about the album is also everything that makes that album unique. Eminem has stated that after getting clean from drugs he had to re-learn how to rap again, Relapse’s accents are the byproduct of this. Even when you look at Eminem's early Relapse era recordings of live performances you can see how awkward he used to look on stage, compare to a completely dominate stage presence in the early 2000s. The accents come from a voice inside. Eminem had to find away to connect the rhymes he thought about constantly, and frankly this murderous, psychotic killer persona is something that let him achieve this. On the other hand, songs like Beautiful, Deja Vu, Underground and Careful What You Wish For shows us that he was still capable creating songs on par to his earlier work and even exceeding it.
So why, besides the accents and the murderous persona is Relapse so unique? In my opinion the little details add up to this albums uniqueness, such as the “Devil Slim Shady” voice that you can hear echoing in My Darling and a few other songs. Also, this album was perhaps the first and last time where an album was mostly Dr. Dre’s produced, and to this day i think the as many other Dre produced tracks, Relapses beat’s still sound somewhat fresh. It also captures a significant turning point of Hip-Hop. The start of a new decade meant a whole new sound will emerge very soon, and Eminem was one of the last OG's who where still releasing music at the time, but it was not the same quality as his last albums. The same problem was encountered by Nas, JayZ and even 50Cent who had an insane run a few years back. 2009 was the year Hip-Hop stopped, and later on it started to shape into a genre that we all know now. Relapse and Recovery were all made right before streaming became popular, and Eminem was still huge on physical sales, outselling everyone he competed with.
Now talking about general track lists, personally, my absolute favorite of the album varies. For the past year or to i feel in love with My Music Box from Refill, which i consider a part of one big project that i didn't have much time to discuss. The sweet, child-like harmony before the beat drops is as incredible as the vivid pictures that Eminem paints in his verses.
He’s dancing with carcasses... i guess a modern day jack the ripper is all that i am.
Relapse is an important album for me as it sort of a guilty pleasure, that i got hooked on back in 2008, when i evidently rediscovered it after a few years of not listening to rap at all. Back then i wasn’t keen or trying to find everyone’s opinions about albums or music in general. Everything was left to my imagination. As English is not my native language, to this day, 10 years later i find bars and mentions that i never used to get.
With all being said, i still strongly stand besides my statement that Relapse is the most unique album Eminem has ever released. It perhaps has the best production out of his whole discography. It became a cult classic after all these years and it also reminds us of a similar time not so long ago, where an album full of rape and misogynist, sexist and homophobic lyrics could have went platinum. I like to imagine Relapse as one long nightmare Eminem once had during his recovery from addictions. Let's discuss.
- How has your opinion about the album changed after 10 years since it's release?
- Where does release stack up in terms of discography in Eminem's career?
- Does Eminem's latest output put Relapse ahead, or behind? *
- What are your personal favorite songs or bars out of the album?

2020.10.12 18:28 Claytemple_Media Guy Gavriel Kay: A Song for Arbonne Review (of the spoiler-filled variety)
(The following review is a transcription from audio)
I’m excited to revisit a book that has been so important to me, but I’m really thrilled because we are finally talking about a book from the High Fantasy subgenre. I’m sure there are a lot of definitions about this term out there in the fandom – and also a lot of arguments about defining it – so let me just say that I’m using the term High Fantasy simply to mean a fantasy story that takes place entirely in an imaginary self-contained world with its own rules and properties. The Lord of the Rings
is the classic example of High Fantasy, but also there is Game of Thrones
. And for a lot of people High Fantasy is Fantasy – this was certainly true for me as an adolescent – and I expect that we’ll read a lot more of this sub-genre as we go.
Now, this is not universally the case, but it often makes sense to begin any dive into a work of High Fantasy by talking about the world before getting into the plot and characters, so let’s do that first. In A Song for Arbonne
, Kay imagines a world more-or-less similar to Western Europe during the High Middle Ages, which is the classic period of the Middle Ages between the year 1000 and the onset of the Black Death in 1348. So, this is a world with knights and castles, kings and counts, and a continent full of people speaking different languages and arranged in independent polities but which shares a common religion.
That religion is going to be important, so let’s start with that. We don’t actually know all that much about the religion, but because Kay is working within a high-medieval paradigm he’s able to insinuate a lot by simply presenting us with a priestly monotheism at least broadly similar to medieval Christianity. There is a single God, whose name is Corannos, and he has priests and temples. There is some kind of hierarchy among the priests, though it’s not clear if that organization supersedes political boundaries. What is clear, though, is that this religion is at least nominally important for lay-people as well, and in this world knights are called “corans” and they are officially members of the Order of Corannos who have been consecrated by a priest. Sadly, we don’t ever see this consecration in action in the book, but we can envision something similar to a medieval knighting ceremony like the one described by Ramon Llull in the late thirteenth century.
Now there’s a catch to the universality of this religion on this continent: there is one region where a variation of this religion is practiced, and of course that region is Arbonne, where our story will take place. People in Arbonne worship the god Coran, but they also worship the goddess Rian whom they regard as more important, and indeed the clerical organization of Rian is closely affiliated with the ruling family of Arbonne. This religious difference is going to drive the central conflict of the book, but the plot hinges on geo-politics, so let’s turn our attention there.
Arbonne is one of six linguistically distinct regions on this continent – and you’ll notice I’m carefully avoiding using the words “country” and “state” here, and there will be more on that in the next segment. Alright, so Arbonne is one of six regions and these are all loosely based on Western Europe in the High Middle Ages. Arbonne is southern France, and there are correspondences to northern Italy, Germany, Spain, and England as well. But the region that matters most is Gorhaut, which corresponds to northern France and is therefore the northern neighbor of Arbonne.
There are two things that matter about Gorhaut. The first is that it has been involved in a protracted war with its neighbor Valensa, which is the analog to England in this world, and has lost a massive chunk of territory in a peace treaty that followed a devastating military defeat. The second is that Gorhaut is the center of the Corannos religion. This is where the god Corannos was born long ago in the days before the creation of humans and it is therefore where the High Elder of Corannos resides.
This High Elder is a man named Galbert de Garsenc and he despises the people of Arbonne because of their religion – a religion he regards as a heresy. There’s a great passage about this fairly early in the book when Galbert is calling for the king of Gorhaut to invade Arbonne and destroy the Rian religion. Galbert says: “Gorhaut is the Heartland, the place where Corannos of the Ancients was born in the days before man walked and woman fell into her ruin.” And then a little later he says “Beyond the mountains south of us they mock Corannos. They live under the god’s own bright sun, which is the most gracious gift to man, and they mock his sovereignty. They demean him with temples to a woman, a foul goddess of midnight and magics and the blood-stained rites of women. They cripple and wound our beloved Corannos with this heresy. They unman him – or they think they do.”
So we can see that misogyny is at the heart of this hatred and hostility. Galbert thinks of women as fallen or debased, and the fact that women play a role in the religious life of Arbonne disturbs him. Moreover, Arbonne in general fails to uphold Galbert’s standards of misogyny. The current ruler is a woman and the defining aspect of Arbonnais culture is troubadour love poetry – a literature that places elite women at the center of society and encourages them to have sexual relationships with men who aren’t their husbands – namely, troubadours.
And while the plot of the book culminates in the invasion of Arbonne, the book is really about Arbonnais culture and especially about troubadours. So now that we are many minutes into our recap, it’s probably time to meet our protagonist, through whose eyes we will see Arbonne and the rest of this imaginary world. That protagonist is Blaise de Garsenc, the younger son of the High Elder of Corannos, Galbert de Garsenc.
When we meet Blaise, he’s been working as a mercenary soldier for several years despite the fact that he is a member of a wealthy and politically powerful family. Blaise was deeply upset by the treaty that ceded the northern part of Gorhaut to Valensa – a treaty largely the work of his own father. Blaise was at the battle that led to this treaty – he saw his king killed along with many of his comrades – and so for him this treaty was a betrayal by the new king, even perhaps a sort of treason.
Blaise begins the novel working for a small-time local lord, but he is quickly recruited by one of the major players in Arbonnais politics who has figured out who Blaise is, even though he never uses his patronym. As Blaise is having various adventures throughout Arbonne such as kidnapping a troubadour and participating in the regional holidays, we get a series of cut scenes in Gorhaut – and that’s where the speech from Galbert de Garsenc comes from. Through these cut scenes it becomes clear that Gorhaut is going to use the security of the treaty with Valensa to invade Arbonne, and our Arbonnais characters are not unaware of this either.
In these cut scenes we also meet the rest of Blaise’s family, especially his sister-in-law Rosala who is pregnant. Rosala is afraid of her father the High Elder and also of the new king who puts his own misogyny into practice by using his station to sexually assault women without consequence and who has his eye on her. We’ll talk more about Rosala’s experiences in the next segment, but what matters for the recap – and we’re nearing the end – what matters here is that Rosala flees to Arbonne and receives political asylum for herself and her infant son.
In the end, Blaise declares himself the rightful king of Gorhaut and there is a big battle in Arbonne to settle the matter. Blaise and his Arbonnais allies – and a not insignificant number of disaffect Gorhautians – win the day and Blaise becomes king and his father Galbert is killed. There are a dizzying number of personal stories that I’ve left out of the recap – though we’ll talk about some of them in upcoming segments – and these all get neatly and happily wrapped up in the end, too. There’s at least one wedding, a secret child, and a redeemed buffoon – it’s all actually quite Shakespearean and it’s really rather emotionally satisfying. And that brings us to the end of A Song for Arbonne, but there’s still a lot to talk about, so let’s jump into some Themes and Motifs.
Themes and Motifs
My entry into thinking about A Song for Arbonne
is through the historical Albigensian Crusade and the High Middle Ages – and I should say that I’m recording this episode only a few days after I’ve finished up teaching a course on War and Society in the High Middle Ages
, so this is really the lens through which I’m viewing this fantasy novel.
Alright, so, the Albigensian Crusade. As it says on the box, this was a Crusade – a papally sanctioned holy war – and it began in 1209 and ended ish in 1229. Most Crusades involved Western Christian armies fighting non-Christians outside of Western Christendom – the Holy Land, Egypt, Tunisia, Spain of course – and Kay has another book all about this – and also north-eastern Europe. But the Albigensian Crusade has the distinction of being waged within Western Christendom against other Christians – Christians deemed heretics, but Christians nonetheless, and we’ll come back to that in just a minute.
The Crusader was largely undertaken with the support and leadership of the French royal family, but it’s important to note that in this case the kingdom of France was limited to only a small part of what we today think of as France, really just north-central and north-eastern France. Almost all of western France was ruled by the kings of England – in this book that’s Valensa, which really seems to be Normandy, the region of France that was an important part of the English crown. South-eastern France was a semi-autonomous region of the Holy Roman Empire – greater Germany, we might say. And, finally, we come to the part of France on which Arbonne itself is based – south-central France, the Languedoc. This was a patchwork of independent polities that recognized the suzerainty of the Count of Toulouse as well as the Count of Barcelona. People in this region spoke a distinct language called Occitan or Occitanian – and that’s what Languedoc means – it’s the place where people use “oc” for “yes” and is contrasted to the Languedoil where people say “oui.”
The culture of the Languedoc was distinct from the culture for France in a number of ways besides language, and I’ll talk about two of these, but let’s start with religion. By definition, a Crusade is a religious war and in this case it was a war to stamp out the Albigensian heresy – and Albigensian, by the way, just means “having to do with the area around the town of Albi” – and in A Song for Arbonne this heresy is represented by the Rian religion – a religion that doesn’t deny Corannos’s existence, but has a different theological understanding of who he is and of his relationship with Rian, who is also acknowledged in the orthodox Corannos religion.
The heresy that the Crusaders wanted to stamp out in southern France is called Catharism, and the people who practice it are called Cathars. For medieval and early modern theologians, Catharism was a dualist and anti-materialist heretical form of Christianity. Cathars believed in God and regarded the Bible as scripture, but they thought that they lived in an ongoing battle between the forces of Good and Evil, or God and Satan. Moreover, the material world – the world we live in – wasn’t the creation of God, but of Satan and that it is therefore an evil place. Because the world is an evil place, it is sinful to reproduce – the condemn souls to live in this vile prison – and also to delight in eating or other bodily pleasures. Bodies themselves are evil, and this belief necessarily runs into some problems in Christianity, which is centered around the idea that God himself was once incarnated in the form of Jesus Christ. But if bodies are evil and God gave himself a body, then is God evil is a question that might arise from these two beliefs. And so Cathars had a complicated understanding of Jesus Christ and the extent to which he had a body and whether he really was God and so on.
None of this makes it’s way into A Song for Arbonne
– and we’ll get back to our book in a moment, but before we do I want to say that scholars now tend to think that everything I just told you is wrong, that it was all invented or exaggerated by the Inquisition and later writers, and indeed much of this scholarly work got started around the time that Kay was writing A Song for Arbonne
. If you’re interested in reading more about this I’d suggest two books: one by my fellow Princetonian Mark Pegg called A Most Holy War: The Albigensian Crusade and the Battle for Christendom
; and the other is The War on Heresy
by R.I. Moore. Both of these are fascinating works of scholarship.
Okay, let’s get back to Arbonne. We can see a loose parallel with Catharism in the idea that there are two deities, Rian and Corannos, though this isn’t really a form of dualism. But for the most part Kay has abandoned any of the particulars of Catharism and instead adapted some of the other cultural distinctions between northern and southern France for his purposes. This is probably a good move because the Venn Diagram of people who are super into Christian theology and also super into fantasy novels is more or less monopolized by Gene Wolfe fans.
So what Kay does instead is make this about women – and in particular about misogyny. We’ve seen already in the recap segment that the Corannos religion believes that women are fallen creatures and that men are not – and this has an obvious parallel in some Christian interpretations of Adam and Eve and The Fall of Man. And Galbert de Garsenc hates women and, seemingly, so does his entire culture. We see much of this from the perspective of the character Rosala who fears for her body and her life and eventually flees Gorhaut because she refuses to allow a daughter to grow up with these same fears or to allow a son to be raised to hate women. Kay takes this a step farther – a step too far, I think, actually – by giving us a young king who is a sexual predator who openly pursues the wives of other members of the ruling class and who holds court while receiving oral sex from a serving woman.
All of this is contrasted in Arbonne, where a woman rules and where there is a female god and a female high priest. Moreover, in Arbonne, love poetry venerates women for their beauty and their secular attributes, and the women of the ruling class – although married young and without their own input or real consent – take lovers as they please.
Now, in our popular culture we tend to think of the High Middle Ages as an inherently misogynistic culture, or at least a sexist culture. Men held power and lived public lives while women worked in the home or, in the case of elite women, were held prisoner in castles and deemed important only as part of real estate deals. The reality, of course, is much more complicated than this, but this picture does derive some important scholarship of the middle and late twentieth century – and it’s scholarship that Kay says he has read in his acknowledgements.
In particular, Kay has read the work of French historian Georges Duby, one of the most important medievalists of the twentieth century. In a series of books and articles between 1950 and 1985, Duby described the aristocratic culture of northern France during the High Middle Ages as a rape culture. Duby points to the fact that women were married off at ages that make us extremely uncomfortable – twelve, thirteen, fourteen – married off as girls, as children, as people incapable of giving informed consent. Aristocratic women, in Duby’s interpretation of narrative sources, were largely powerless and were completely separated from society. Duby’s argument makes use of a number of religious texts, as well, and he points to changing conceptions of marriage during the High Middle Ages, such as a new emphasis on clerical celibacy – forbidding priests from marrying and having children.
Most scholars no longer accept Duby’s picture of medieval elite society – a picture framed by the types of sources Duby used and even more so by the types of sources he didn’t use. And this question – was High Medieval society a rape culture – was one of the historiographical debates that my students conducted in my War and Society in the High Middle Ages course this past semester. When I do these debates, I put the students in three groups and have them champion one scholar’s answer to a set of questions in dialogue – or argument – with scholars who have come to different conclusions. I also always have a group of student judges decide the winner of the debate, and in this case Duby’s interpretation received no support from the student judges.
Still, even though no medieval king ever received oral sex on his throne in front of his court, Kay creates some compelling bad guys this way and champions the fair treatment of women, and that’s certainly a good thing. And Kay has done more than just read Georges Duby, here. Kay has also done a lot of reading about Occitanian troubadours, a literary phenomenon of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Troubadours wrote love poetry that was performed in elite households – courts, if you like – throughout the Languedoc, and troubadours themselves were prominent members of Occitanian society, and indeed the first troubadours were members of the elite – and this is something that Kay shows us in Arbonne, as well.
Troubadour poetry places women at the center of elite social life, but it also is foundational in the invention of romantic love as cultural ideal – something to be prized and prioritized. If you’ve read any book or seen any TV show with a love story in it, then you’ve experienced the legacy of troubadour poetry. But on top of this, many women were troubadours, and so the percentage of women writing literature in the Languedoc is much higher than in any other part of Western Christendom at this time.
And the contrast between the place and role of women in this society and that of Duby’s image of northern France is stark and obvious, and it’s something that many scholars have written about. If you’re interested in this, I recommend the book The Women Troubadours
by Meg Bogin. The Georges Duby book I suggest is The Knight, the Lady, and the Priest
, and if you’d like to contrast that with one of the other scholars I use in my class, you should check Kimberly LoPrete’s biography of Adela of Blois. These books are all great and worth reading on their own, but I think you’ll especially enjoy them if you’ve been as captivated by Arbonne as I have.
So, to summarize this all up before we move on to the other theme I want to talk about, Kay has imagined the Albigensian Crusade as a clash of civilizations between a misogynistic and bellicose culture and an urbane and gender-equal culture. Throughout, of course, it is obvious who the bad guys are, and perhaps the thesis of this book could be something like “if more of us valued food, and song, and cheer above the oppression of women, it would be a merrier world.”
Okay, let’s take a deep breath before we move into the second theme of A Song for Arbonne
, and this is nationalism and patriotism. Indeed, we might say that while Kay is very much exploring romantic love in his depiction of Arbonne’s troubadour culture, his plot relies very much on a profound love of country – a deep patriotism. And we see this all over the book. The Arbonnais duke Blaise works for as a mercenary, a man named Bertran de Talair, is in a decades-long personal vendetta with another aristocrat named Urte de Miraval, and this rivalry threatens to undo the military security of Arbonne. And during the climax of the book, Urte refuses to fight the invading army from Gorhaut if he’ll have to take orders from Bertran. And when we get to the big battle, his army enters the fray very late and at a moment when it looks like he has joined forces with the invader because he hates Bertran more than he loves his country. This whole thing turns out to be a ruse, and as Urte is dying he explains that of course he loves his country enough to set aside personal rivalries.
Love of country is also at the core of Blaise’s usurpation of the throne of Gorhaut. Any king who sells off part of his country is a traitor to the people he is meant to protect, a genuine villain. And this belief pits Blaise against his own family, against his own father. And so we see that for our heroes patriotism not only trumps personal rivalries, but also family loyalties. And part of what makes Galbert de Garsenc a villain is that he identifies more with his religious identity than with his national identity. Also, he’s just a terrible human.
And there’s a great scene near the end of the book when musicians from around the continent are performing together at a fair. There’s a bit of nationalistic rivalry going on here and the musicians of Arbonne are challenged to defend their reputation as the best, and the performer who takes up this challenge says that although troubadour songs are usually love songs, he’ll perform one that isn’t. He then goes on to sing a pastoral piece about the olive groves and the vineyards and the mountains of Arbonne. And at the end he corrects himself and says “on reflection, I did sing a love song after all.” And it’s this patriotism that really sets our heroes apart from the villains, even more so than their treatment of women, and it’s something that Kay is extolling as a virtue.
Kay’s plot also takes this up, and he really envisions a type of nineteenth-century Balance of Power intrigue story set in the High Middle Ages. As fun as this is, this is a wholly anachronistic idea and I want to spend some time now talking about nationalism. And this is something that I spent several weeks on in my Fall of the Roman Empire class last fall where I discovered that my students really didn’t know what nationalism is coming into the class, that they thought it was just a synonym for patriotism – that it means loving your country – and so I’d like to put my teacher hat on for a few minutes and talk about that.
So let’s start with a kind of primer on nationalism before we look at how it shows up in A Song for Arbonne
, and we can get going by just talking about the word “nation” itself. We hear this word all the time in phrases like “national football league” or “national security.” And what we mean when we use it this way is the state we live in. When an American uses “national” she means something that has to do with the United States, while a Pakistani would mean something that has to do with Pakistan.
But this usage of “nation” – this idea that it is just another synonym for “state” or “country” – is new. Medieval kings and even the writers of the U.S. constitution would have been confused by this usage of the word. And this usage grows out of a movement to reshape our ideas about group identities in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
But what, then, does the word “nation” mean? At its core the word is more-or-less a synonym for “ethnic group.” The word itself derives from the Latin word “natio,” which has this meaning. And we get other words from “natio” as well – native, natal, and nativity all come from this, and so you can see that it has something to do with being born – maybe the place where you were born or the group into which you were born.
So now let’s define “nationalism.” “Nationalism” has three key components: First, the belief that everyone belongs to a nation – that is, everyone has an ethnicity. Second, the belief that a person’s national or ethnic identity is that person’s most important identity. Finally, the belief that a nation should have the power of self-determination – that is, some kind of political power.
And we live in this world – we all believe this to some degree or another – but as I’ve said this is a new idea, this is a belief system that is invented in Europe in the late eighteenth century and really gains traction in the nineteenth. This is to say that this belief is newer than the United States of America – the country that I’m recording this podcast in came into existence before this belief did. And people who held this belief had to convince other people of it – they had to convert people to this way of thinking. They had to convince people that their ethnic identity was more important than their civic identity – both at the city and regional level.
And we can look at some examples of this. Let’s start with Italy, which wasn’t a state – a country – until 1871. People on the Italian peninsula and in the islands that became part of the new state of Italy didn’t all speak the same dialect – and these regional differences weren’t just a matter of silly accents, but could be as mutually unintelligible as French and Spanish are. So part of the Italian nationalist movement relied on convincing people that if they lived in the new state of Italy then they should all speak the same dialect rather than the dialect of their region or home-town. And lots of people resisted this idea.
Another type of identity that nationalists had to talk people into minimizing in favor of ethnicity was religious identity – and this is something we’ve seen already in A Song for Arbonne
where this is part of Galbert de Garsenc’s villainy. But here Germany is a great example. Germany also wasn’t a state – wasn’t a country – until 1871. In this case, nationalists had to convince people in Bavaria and people in Prussia that they were the same people – the same nation – because they spoke the same language, even though they had different religions and those religions were something that their great-grandparents had tried to kill each other over.
This belief in nationalism was everywhere in the nineteenth century, but it always faced resistance and challenges. We can still ask ourselves whether the United States is a nation? Right? Are we a single unified state with a single shared identity? Or are we a federation of fifty independent states with a plurality of identities? And the American Civil War was about this question. The southern states that seceded and formed the Confederate States of America believed that the U.S. was a federation that they could opt out of. The states that remained disagreed, and there was a war about this.
And we can even see the move to form the Confederate States of America as a nationalist move. Elites in the South saw themselves as part of a different culture – a different ethnic group – than elites in the North. This was largely wrapped up in the morality of slavery, but there were other elements to it as well. And because they felt like they had a distinct culture they wanted to exercise their right to national-self-determination – that third component of nationalism – and we fought an extremely bloody war about it.
Now, as I said, we live in a nationalist world – we live in a world shaped by the belief system of nationalism – everyone has a national identity whether they want one or not. But exporting this idea to the High Middle Ages is entirely anachronistic, and we can return to talking about the political boundaries of Western Christendom for an illustration of this. Today we think of England and France as nations, but around the year 1200 this was simply not true. England was part of a much larger political community that included Wales, Ireland, Brittany, southwestern France, and Normandy – and all of it was ruled by a French-speaking political elite who owned property in many of these regions.
And this type of situation existed almost everywhere in Western Christendom during the High Middle Ages. Italy was divided and multi-ethnic, and the King of Aragon lived mostly in Catalonia rather than Aragon because he was also the Count of Barcelona. There was no sense, either, that all French-speaking people ought to be members of a single political community, or that all German-speaking people should, and so on, though this was certainly the dream of nineteenth- and twentieth-century nationalists around the world.
But Kay takes this belief system for granted, though I’m sure he knows that it’s anachronistic for the Middle Ages. Kay shows us a Germany that is united under a single strong king and shows us an Italy that isn’t a part of the same political community as Germany, though in fact it frequently was. But the clearest instance of Kay’s anachronistic nationalism has to do with the peace treaty between Gorhaut and Valensa. The king of Valensa appears briefly in the book to explain that although he wants Arbonne to win the war with Gorhaut, he can’t offer any help. And during his explanation he says that since Gorhaut has ceded a huge chunk of territory to Valensa, he is busy repopulating this territory. He says that he has to consolidate his hold on the land by getting Valensan farmers to move in and replace the Gorhautian farmers who have all left their land to live on the other side of the new political boundary.
So what Kay envisions here is that if you are Gorhautian you can’t – or at least probably won’t want to – live in Valensa. And this is certainly the idea that we have now – we can think of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the invention of Turkey as a nation in the 1920s as an example. During this time about a million and a half people moved from Turkey to Greece because they weren’t ethnically Turkish – and in doing so they gave up ancestral farms and homes and even abandoned whole villages or city neighborhoods to do so.
But this is an absurd idea for the High Middle Ages where political boundaries change all the time but nothing else does – if you’re a serf farming some land, your identity doesn’t change just because a political boundary has changed or you have a new lord. Indeed, the serfs and even the few free farmers were part of the object of conquest – you wanted the farmers as much as you wanted the farms.
Okay, that’s a lot about nationalism but it’s all been kind of a pre-amble to what I really want to say about A Song for Arbonne
and its relationship with the actual Albigensian Crusade. The High Middle Ages are really the birth of the modern world – most of our public institutions develop during this time, such as universities and hospitals, but also the idea of the state – that is, modern government. At the beginning of the year 1000, the kingdom of France was really just the city of Paris, but by the time of the Black Death the kingdom of France includes almost all of the territory that is today considered France. And the kings of France acquired most of this territory around the year 1200 in two important conquests. The first was Normandy, which was taken from the kings of England – and this is really the historical analog to the treaty with Valensa. And the other is the Albigensian Crusade, which brought an enormous amount of territory under the control of the king of France, and all of this has to be administered through new techniques of government that develop into the state bureaucracies we all live with today. And there’s a great book about this by the massively important scholar Joseph Strayer titled On the Medieval Origins of the Modern State – it’s one of my favorite books of all time.
Finally – and I mean it – this conquest was an important moment in the development of modern nationalism because over time it erased Occitanian culture and replaced it with French culture because the conquest came in the form of a Crusade – an attack on the divergent religious practices of southern France. Without this aspect, the French state may have continued to develop as a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual state. So, the Albigensian Crusade was a significant event, the effects of which are still with us. And I love what Kay has done with this idea – I love how he has taken some core ideas from a handful of historians and turned them into a fantasy novel … which then turned me into a medieval historian. And I think this is a good note on which to move into Strengths and Weaknesses.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Now this type of world-building that Kay does is for me a real strength of this book and just about everything he’s written since then. Kay creates a fully realized speculative world that is populated by a culturally diverse cast of characters – even though our plot takes place on a rather small geo-political stage, we feel as if we know all about the wider world because of this.
And really it’s his characters who are the greatest strength of Kay’s writing. Every character has a complicated – perhaps overly complicated – emotional life. Everyone is carrying around a lifetime of baggage and it shows in all their actions and the way that they perceive the actions of others. Every conversation, every action, and every thought is full of emotional significance for Kay’s characters and he writes all of this beautifully.
But this is perhaps a double-edged sword, and I have to say that the book’s biggest weakness is the depiction of characters’ love lives. In particular Blaise – our protagonist – is romantically or sexually involved with three women – and really, we could get up to five if we want to be loose with our terminology – and it’s all a bit much and none of it is ever consequential. The plot of the book – and even Blaise’s own character arc – could have progressed in exactly the same manner without this element, and I think it would have been improved.
Even more so, the love life of the Arbonnais aristocrat Bertran de Talair is absurd. Betran is haunted by the death of the love of his life and the murder of his infant child by that woman’s husband, Urte de Miraval. And I like this – there’s a real Gothic element to this family tragedy, and it nicely sets up an important element in the theme of patriotism. But Bertran’s mechanism for coping with this loss is to sleep with as many women as possible – and this is a behavior he keeps up for more than twenty years. Kay writes Bertran as if he’s utterly heart-broken, as if we’re supposed to feel sorry for him that he has to constantly have one-night-stands because his true love is dead … but it just doesn’t work for me. In fact, I find it remarkably unsympathetic and even tedious.
Wow, okay, that’s a long review – it’s our longest yet and I’m sure it will hold the record for more than a little while.
But even with as much time as I spent on this book, there are some important aspects that I left out. One that really intrigues me is the theme of fate and free will. Kay gives us a lot of this near the end of the book when Galbert de Garsenc gives his final villainous monologue in which he explains that even though he’s going to die, everything that his son Blaise has ever done has been because he manipulated him into it – even declaring himself king. There is also the presence of magic in this world – something I’ve left out until now – which largely comes in the form of visions of the future.
I hope you’ll talk with me about this theme and about the others I’ve spent more time on. And we can talk about the poetry, too, and the references to Kay’s first major work, the Fionavar Tapestry.
Thanks for reading! And special thanks for talking with me about this book I love so much! This review was transcribed from an episode of Atoz: A Speculative Fiction Book Club Podcast. If you're interested, you can check it (and other episodes) out here: Apple Spotify Amazon Website

2020.10.08 19:16 modiglianinude [Interactive Fiction] The Fall of Fallen Hero, or, a Game and Its Creator Really Live Up to Their Title
Los Diablos’ hottest club is Fallen Hero. This hobby drama has everything! Creators allowing their fandom to influence their work, girls who are obsessed with gay men, art theft, Discord server bans, no boundaries to be found anywhere, racism, and absolutely no common sense.
Welcome to the Fallen Hero fandom in June 2020. Note
: A majority of the content in this post is from my post in the Hobby Scuffles thread a few weeks ago, so it may be familiar to you if you read it. However, I have added and expanded on some parts of this write up!
Fallen Hero (Pre Fall, Obviously)
Fallen Hero: Rebirth (also known as FHR) is a text-based game written in the ChoiceScript language and hosted by Choice of Games (COG) LLC, written by Malin Rydén, also referred to as an interactive novel.
About ChoiceScript/COG games
ChoiceScript is a fairly simple (in my opinion, having played around with it and worked on a game of my own) coding language used to create what are essentially "choose your own adventure" books in a game format. Most of these games end up on COG's forums as Works in Progress, or WIPs. Some of them become very successful, and after meeting a number of conditions, can be purchased by COG and released under their Hosted Games imprint. Under those deals, the game will be available on various places (I play on the Hosted Games app, I know they're on Steam and PC as well) and the author will receive a portion of proceeds.
Authors can very quietly make a shockingly large amount of money through these deals, I'd estimate that the authors making the most can reach into the six figure range between their profit shares and other things like Patreons. (One of my favorites makes around $90k a year from Patreon.) The COG community is not tiny, by any means, and popular books have trended on social media, particularly Tumblr, causing them to grow in popularity even more. (A recent release for a popular book series crashed the site it was hosted on after experiencing a renaissance this summer.)
Part of the appeal of COG games is that they allow players to choose a great deal about the world and its characters. Since there are few official visuals (and some authors may lock those official visuals as Patreon rewards, for example), players are allowed to shape and imagine the characters and settings as they see fit, particularly their own main characters. These games are really appealing because of their inclusivity: the most popular COG games are expansive in terms of gender, sexuality, and race options for players. This is important to keep in mind, especially when it comes to understanding the diversity of the fandoms and OCs in fandoms for COG games.
About Fallen Hero
The Fallen Hero series is one of the most popular series on the Hosted Games network, with the first book in the series, Rebirth, frequently topping the bestseller list, though, at present, it’s fallen quite a bit in rankings. It's been acclaimed by people who play COG games, and is often recommended to newcomers.
In Rebirth (without spoiling the content too much), players play as a former superhero named Sidestep with mind control powers, who is now (for reasons the player will discover) on a journey to become a supervillain. There's a supporting cast of characters and Romance Options (ROs), who I'll touch on more in a moment, but, arguably, romance is not the primary focus of FHR. It's a game that deals a lot with things like inequality, physical and mental disability (particularly PTSD and the experience of trauma), and identity. This is, again, important for understanding the Fallen Hero fandom. The books are inherently about a struggle against an authority that may resonate with people’s current feelings and experiences.
Another part of the appeal of Hosted Games books and series are the direct connections to the people making the games. They are began as WIPs, and are almost never (I can't think of any cases where they have been, but I'll say 'almost never' to be safe) released as completed books. That means those who participate in the public betas (a requirement for a game to be purchased and published as a Hosted Game) can see the development of a book through to its publication, and in many cases players are able to have input on the game through suggestion or help with errors. Authors often make social media accounts to communicate directly with players, and can be asked things about the games' lore or characters. This is particularly important because the sequel to Rebirth, Fallen Hero: Retribution, is currently in beta and, as far as I know, will be released later this year if things continue as planned.
For FHR, Tumblr is where the problems began.
Fallen Hero: The Fall Begins
The author of FHR, Malin Rydén, a Swede, has a Tumblr account at @fallenhero-rebirth. They also were part of an official Discord server for the Fallen Hero series. The is a second server to mention, the alpha server. As of right now, October 2020, the second book in the Fallen Hero series, Retribution, has not yet been released. I’ll admit that I’m not sure about its status right now, but I believe it is currently still in a closed alpha (a test and input period for a select number of people chosen by the author.) This is what the alpha server refers to, people chosen by Malin to participate in alpha testing.
The Fallen Hero community on Tumblr is decently sized, with the best-received works of fanart reaching around 1k notes each, maxing out at, I want to say, 2k, though mid hundreds is the most expected range. As mentioned previously, the nature of Hosted Games is that everyone has a unique player character, and ChoiceScript authors usually allow a great deal of customization of these characters; because there is no artwork for these games, people are allowed to imagine nearly anything. In the Fallen Hero series, Sidestep's gender, ethnicity/race, hair, and sexuality, among other things, are completely customizable in game, and their personality can be shaped through the player's choices, creating a unique set of stats that affect the game.
A number of, primarily artists, created popular versions of Sidestep and their villain costume (which can also be customized in the game), and their unique personalities/appearances were known to followers of these artists. Malin would often reblog fanart of these Sidesteps to their blog, and took a personal interest in these characters, sending asks to artists and commenting on various aspects of their work. Crucially, as well, Malin also engages with fanfiction for Fallen Hero, which, if you are active in fanfiction circles, you will know that most authors do not do because of (1) the risk of plagiarism, inadvertent or not, and (2) the risk of being sued by people who know you read their fanfiction and you may have stolen from them. Malin's closeness with their fandom should raise some red flags, and if you are concerned, you'd be write.
Boy Problems, Who’s Got ‘Em
Now, about the ROs in Fallen Hero. In Rebirth, there are two Romance Options, both gender-customizable. One is Charge (Julia or Ricardo Ortega, based on your choice for their gender) and the second is Dr Mortum. Charge is a member of the Rangers, a superhero group, and an old friend of Sidestep; they are also prominently of Latin background, and darker skinned Latin. Dr Mortum is Black and dark skinned.
In Retribution, something interesting happened. The other members of the Rangers, Herald (a white man named Daniel), Steel (also known as Wei Chen, previously known to be a gay man of Chinese background), and Lady Argent (no ethnicity specified, her skin is made of metal [hence her superhero name] and her name is given as Angela though [spoiler for the Fallen Hero series ahead] her actual name is Ximena, suggesting she may be Latina
), had the potential to become ROs. By nature, an RO can be romanced by any character, male, female, or nonbinary, so this was the first red flag — Steel would be changed from gay to bisexual in order for all characters to have him as an RO. This was controversial, as Steel’s identity as a gay man was the catalyst for a great deal of what happened to him. This post
has a great breakdown of why even considering Steel becoming an RO was a bad decision by Malin. [Note: the OP has moved blogs so this post can only be accessed on mobile.] Note that, as of now, Steel cannot be romanced by female characters.
The second red flag was Herald's route (the pairing known as 'FlyStep', as Herald has the power of flight). Malin was close with a fanartist known as Smute (from their URL on Tumblr, smuteczekbiczo), a woman from Poland, and Smute's Sidestep, Jed, was interested in Herald. Allegations have been made that Smute herself wrote the Herald route in Retribution, but it's unclear. Some believe that the route was written by Smute herself, others by Malin for her, but the lack of transparency is an obvious problem. What is clear is that Sidestep in that route is based on Jed, and the route was written specifically for Smute, based on fanfiction
(read that author's note) and scenarios. Sidestep even canonically acts like Jed, rather than being controlled by the player. There have been numerous assertions about the influence Smute has over canon, including an entire plotline for the second book. Malin has not been subtle about this, they also wrote scenes for Ortega/Charge based on other player characters and made it clear they did so.
This is pretty alarming on the face of things, that an entire series has been shaped by and for certain people the author is close to on Tumblr, but things can and did get more chaotic.
Enter: Smute's Discord. (The official Discord mentioned earlier.)
Okay, It’s Actually Falling Now
In early June, protests were occurring in the US over the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. Members of the Fallen Hero Discord attempted, as many on social media did, to share links for places to donate. (Bail funds and GoFundMes and the like.) The mods removed these links and refused to acknowledge anything was happening.
When users began expressing discomfort, the bans began. Several prominent and popular members of the fandom were banned from the FHR discord for expressing discontent with mods who were clearly at a loss for what to do and chose the worst possible action to take. The irony was obvious, it’s more than a bit ridiculous to ban links about fighting oppression from a server dedicated to an anti government, anarchist series.
Subsequently, it was revealed to many in the FHR community that the server was, among other things, sheltering white supremacists/neo-Nazis, notably antisemitic and racist, and had many transphobic/homophobic discussions. Users who expressed discomfort would be ignored. The server had become a cesspool.
Allegations against Smute continued to come. Evidence of her racism and fetishizing of gay men piled up. Another moderator, who was known to be white, was said to have said the n word on voice chat. Members were shown to have made transphobic and in my opinion, patently creepy posts about Steel and his sexuality.
At this point, an allegation was also made that an artist had traced the art style of another artist in the fandom, Mango, who had drawn icons for all of his friends, several other prominent artists in the fandom. It was alleged by some artists in the exodus that their designs for Sidestep’s costume had been stolen as well.
Criticisms of the series and Malin that had been suppressed previously began to surface. Malin’s reblogging of white-washed art of their characters was noted, as was their decision to change a gay man to a bisexual one to make him an RO.
Of course, Malin claimed not to have known anything going on on the Discord, but it was shown by members that they actively chose to hand decision making powers to the admin (Smute, that another admin in the server admitted
was racist) in the alpha server. Following this, Malin took a months long break from social media, and made many self-flagellating posts talking about their mental health, which are interesting to read through when you bear in mind they are at least 40+ years old, and considering the role they played in this. They have done little to apologize or take responsibility.
Towards the end of September, Malin resurfaced and they had gone back to posting on the fallenhero-rebirth Tumblr account, but a post was made showing they are still friends with Smute, and they have been quite quiet since.
Following the server’s exposure, there was an exodus of a number of prominent FHR fan artists, who have all left the series behind and do not create content for it anymore or help with the alpha they were a part of.
The fate of the Fallen Hero is very much in limbo. Final Notes
: If you know of any inaccuracies, let me know! I mostly served as a witness to this, and have been piecing it together through the posts of others. Additionally, sorry for any typos, I'm so bad at proofreading.
Edit: below are some screenshots of posts related to this matter, as requested.
- A Jewish server member mentioning the neo-nazis on the server.
- A former server member (I believe)'s post about how the server moderators viewed BLM.
- Another server member discussing the moderator's behavior about links.
- Post about the moderation team removing links about BLM.
- Another post about the server that also points out the hypocrisy regarding the game's content.
- A post about a BLM link being removed from the server.
- A post about the bans for calling moderators out.
- Another post about the bans.
- Screenshots of a mod (Trob) acknowledging the server's and Smute's racism.
- A server member talking about views that misgender trans people in the server and were ignored by mods.
- A post about two mods (Smute and Cheion) remaining in the alpha server.
- A post that mentions Smute's history of fetishizing MLM.
- A post that contains the allegation Smute wrote the Herald route. [Vague spoilers for the Fallen Hero series.]
- Another post alleging Smute wrote the route that points out the route is out of character.
- A post suggesting Smute did not write the route but it was written with her in mind. (Also mentions other favoritism.)
- On the art style theft.
- Malin's first apology post, which acknowledges that they reblogged whitewashed art.
- A post about Malin's having Aspergers that also discusses their feelings on what happened.

2020.10.04 22:42 Mk300mk If every school principal gave this speech at the beginning of the next school year, America would be a better place.
To the students and faculty of our high school: I am your new principal, and honored to be so. There is no greater calling than to teach young people.
I would like to apprise you of some important changes coming to our school. I am making these changes because I am convinced that most of the ideas that have dominated public education in America have worked against you, against your teachers and against our country.
First, this school will no longer honor race or ethnicity. I could not care less if your racial makeup is black, brown, red, yellow or white. I could not care less if your origins are African, Latin American, Asian or European, or if your ancestors arrived here on the Mayflower or on slave ships.
The only identity I care about, the only one this school will recognize, is your individual identity -- your character, your scholarship, your humanity. And the only national identity this school will care about is American. This is an American public school, and American public schools were created to make better Americans.
If you wish to affirm an ethnic, racial or religious identity through school, you will have to go elsewhere. We will end all ethnicity-, race- and non-American nationality-based celebrations. They undermine the motto of America, one of its three central values -- e pluribus unum, "from many, one." And this school will be guided by America's values.
This includes all after-school clubs. I will not authorize clubs that divide students based on any identities. This includes race, language, religion, sexual orientation or whatever else may become in vogue in a society divided by political correctness.
Your clubs will be based on interests and passions, not blood, ethnic, racial or other physically defined ties. Those clubs just cultivate narcissism -- an unhealthy preoccupation with the self -- while the purpose of education is to get you to think beyond yourself. So we will have clubs that transport you to the wonders and glories of art, music, astronomy, languages you do not already speak, carpentry and more. If the only extracurricular activities you can imagine being interesting in are those based on ethnic, racial or sexual identity, that means that little outside of yourself really interests you.
Second, I am uninterested in whether English is your native language. My only interest in terms of language is that you leave this school speaking and writing English as fluently as possible. The English language has united America's citizens for over 200 years, and it will unite us at this school. It is one of the indispensable reasons this country of immigrants has always come to be one country. And if you leave this school without excellent English language skills, I would be remiss in my duty to ensure that you will be prepared to successfully compete in the American job market. We will learn other languages here -- it is deplorable that most Americans only speak English -- but if you want classes taught in your native language rather than in English, this is not your school.
Third, because I regard learning as a sacred endeavor, everything in this school will reflect learning's elevated status. This means, among other things, that you and your teachers will dress accordingly. Many people in our society dress more formally for Hollywood events than for church or school. These people have their priorities backward. Therefore, there will be a formal dress code at this school.
Fourth, no obscene language will be tolerated anywhere on this school's property -- whether in class, in the hallways or at athletic events. If you can't speak without using the f-word, you can't speak. By obscene language I mean the words banned by the Federal Communications Commission, plus epithets such as "Nigger," even when used by one black student to address another black, or "bitch," even when addressed by a girl to a girlfriend. It is my intent that by the time you leave this school, you will be among the few your age to instinctively distinguish between the elevated and the degraded, the holy and the obscene.
Fifth, we will end all self-esteem programs. In this school, self-esteem will be attained in only one way -- the way people attained it until decided otherwise a generation ago -- by earning it. One immediate consequence is that there will be one valedictorian, not eight.
Sixth, and last, I am reorienting the school toward academics and away from politics and propaganda. No more time will devoted to scaring you about smoking and caffeine, or terrifying you about sexual harassment or global warming. No more semesters will be devoted to condom wearing and teaching you to regard sexual relations as only or primarily a health issue. There will be no more attempts to convince you that you are a victim because you are not white, or not male, or not heterosexual or not Christian. We will have failed if any one of you graduates this school and does not consider him or herself inordinately lucky -- to be alive and to be an American.
Now, please stand and join me in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of our country. As many of you do not know the words, your teachers will hand them out to you.

While in Korean it literally means 'Who' in the broader Kpop context it refers to groups that are generally unknown amongst the greater public. It doesn't have to mean they're extremely new, though it can, and there are of course varying degrees of 'unknown' which some groups having very strong niche fandoms and others being almost invisible. I take a fairly broad view and will include groups that may be known to some, but who don't have widespread name recognition. Let's get on with the show...
________________________________________________________ D1CE Who are they?:
D1CE is a five member boy group under D1CE Company. Their name is pronounced "D-Once" and their fandom is Don1y, which is a combination of D1CE and 'Once'. Pre-debut they were known as HNB for 'HappyFace Next Boys'. Company:
D1CE Company is a group-specific sub-label for D1CE under HappyFace Entertainment much like Dreamcatcher operates under Dreamcatcher Company. Most Recent Comeback:
- Song: The lead single from the group's first EP "Wake Up: Roll the World". The song is described as "A trap beat with intense brass" and according to the group is about waking up from sleep and immediately putting everything on the line for the fans. The song hints at the style of other popular boy groups such as Ateez and Monsta X in what's a dark and intense debut track.

Special Single Comeback:
- Song: The lead single from the group's second EP "Draw You: Remember Me". This EP was designed to offer a contrast to the strong and bold first EP, opting for a message of warmth and soft sensibilities about growth and compassion. This track is about a hunger for love and features strong vocal lines interspersed with soft rap elements.
- Composers/Producers: Han Kyungsoo (한경수) (Twice - Melting, Melody Day - Mix & Match, Sonamoo - We are Legendary), Subin Kim (김수빈) (AIMING) (N.Flying - Oh Really, FT Island - Summer Night Dream, Monday Kiz - Get Out), Jo Sehee (조세희) (Vromance - You Can Rely on Me, N.Flying - So Pretty, Cheetah - Feel It)

- Song: A special pre-debut unit release consisting of members Jinyoung and Hyunsoo. The song is a pleasant and upbeat summer tropical house track.
- Composers/Producers: With the Best (위더베스트) (Dreamcatcher - What, Klang - Got Drunk, Park Gun - Have a Drink)
In typical HappyFace fashion the group has a large number of high-quality 'special clip' cover videos, I strongly suggest checking them out. All members have previous survival show experience. Though they pronounce their name 'D-Once' they also imagery of 'rolling the dice' in their song descriptions. Their fandom name was the result of a fan vote. Member Jingyoung has appeared on King of the Masked Singer (link
). I don't normally comment on official colors, but theirs are a particularly pretty shade of bronze and brass (link
). The group has performed in Japan.

Most Recent Comeback:
- Song: Based on the Reggae and Boom Bap styles, this is an upbeat and bright hip-hop style song that doesn't pull any punches in terms of the rap yet never feels like it's trying to hard. With a nice blend of rap and vocal elements this is, IMO, of the strongest female hip-hop debuts I've listened to. The title of the song comes from the area in Seoul where Nada lived at the time, and the song is a representation of herself.

- Composers/Producers: Nada (original artist), Q (Grayscale - I Feel So Good, Sicka J - Madecassol), trnc95 (1Kyne - Closer)
Nada takes her stage name from the Spanish word for 'nothing' and says that it means that "I Am Me". She has competed in Show Me the Money 3 and Unpretty Rapstar 3. She says she was the best member in WA$$UP when it came to twerking. She has been a featured artist on tracks from Pharaoh (link
), The Gita, Stephanie (link
), and Grey Day (link
). She was involved in a dodgeball sports reality TV show with other WA$$UP members and members of 9 Muses. She has a brother who is a cartoonist. She left WA$$UP with fellow members Jinju and Dain over a dispute over lack of payment.
________________________________________________________ IN MEMORIAM MIDNIGHT Who were they?:
MIDNIGHT was a pre-debut girl-group under H&I Entertainment. While the membership numbers shifted continuously throughout the group's pre-debut period they maintained a hip-hop-oriented style. The group disbanded before it could debut. First Pre-Debut Release:
March 9th, 2019 with Girl Groups Flooded
Second Pre-Debut Release:
- Song: A hip-hop driven track about the difficulties of standing out and succeeding in the Korean music market as a girl group when each year sees a flood of new groups all competing for the same attention.
- Composers/Producers: Kong Myeong Jeongdae (공명정대) (Qwala - Call an Ambulance, Crispi Crunch - Thumbs Up, Carrie Diamond - My Heartless Raps Die), Hwang Insun (singer-songwriter)
April 13th, 2019 with Swish
Final Pre-Debut Release:
- Song: Another song calling out the challenges of the industry, about how some groups are slated for fame before they even release a song because of the company they come from, and how the fame game is unforgiving. The company had originally planned to debut the group during that April, however three members suddenly leaving (something called out in the song) changed the plans.
- Composers/Producers: Kong Myeong Jeongdae (공명정대) (see above)
August 20th, 2019 with Algorithm feat. Sleepy
) Performance Video (Link
- Song: Stepping away from their industry commentary this is a more traditional "I Don't Need You" anti-love song. This was Sleepy's first time collaborating with a girl group. As part of the promotions member Byeoljji released a diss track against Sleepy (link). The group underwent more membership changes before this release with a member joining and leaving before the release and two other new members joining.
- Composers/Producers: Kong Myeong Jeongdae (공명정대) (see above)
2018-2020 Reasons for Disbanding:
The group struggled with membership changes throughout its existence, seeing 15 different girls cycle through the group at some point, some never appearing in any official releases. Their debut date was also postponed multiple times. Eventually the company folded and the group was disbanded. YouTube Channel: MIDNIGHT Official Random Stuff Trivia:
Member and leader Danvvb was a former dance trainer at JYP and also a backup dancer for groups such as Winner as well as a choreographer. She is now a soloist and as a YouTube channel (link
). Member Jiwon left MIDNIGHT to join ANS, which also recently disbanded. Member Yebin now goes by Yoolin and is signed with Purple Entertainment, possibly as a soloist. Member Yudi is now Dabi in the group AREAL. Member Chaewon joined Daydream, which quickly disbanded, and is now signed with Liz Entertainment as a member of project group CHIC&IDLE as Xindy. Member Seyeon is now also with Liz Entertainment as part of CHIC&IDLE under the name Byeolha. Member Yunu, who was previously an actress, appears to be continuing to act after leaving the group and has also recently release a solo song Spit it Out
That's it for today, let's get the discussion on!

2020.10.02 11:51 HelpMeGitGudGuy PLEASE HELP!!!! (17M) I have been dealing with a chronic illness for 3 years and have been diagnosed with a social communication disorder.
I will get straight to it. I am 17 and I have been struggling with chronic illness for 3 years now and I was diagnosed clinically with a social communication disorder. I believe (based on my research into the matter) my rough childhood with emotionally abusive, narcissistic parents and current reality are the reason for my problematic social skills.
Growing up I never had many friends. Many times I was left without any. In preschool I didn’t have any friends. I would just seemingly blend in with the other kids joining in their games. I tried to make friends with these 2 girls on the first day of preschool as they were seemingly always together but they instead harassed me calling me names and telling me how terrible I was because I was a boy. Another kid would hit me in the stomach daily claiming “self defense like his mom told him” after I would tell him hello or would have to stand in line behind him and when I told the teachers about this they told me “stop being a tattletale...” and did nothing. Another kid chased me trying to hit me with a stick and when I told the teacher of it once again they told me “stop being a tattletale...” and left with no other choice in order to defend myself I was forced to wrestle the kid to the ground and beat him with stick he tried to hit me with. Those same teachers sent me to the principal and I was suspended for a day. When the same 2 girls from the beginning were breaking the teacher’s things I told the teacher and once again they told me the same thing, “stop being a tattletale...” Damn those hypocrite teachers! (Note: these were the only times I told the teacher of anything. I was not a chronic snitch in preschool).
In elementary school, my dad would tell me daily to play basketball with other kids at school to get more basketball practice for the local youth league I was part of. Try as I may and might, they never let me play with them and never picked me for their teams despite the fact I knew many of them from the local youth league. Even when started a game of my own, I would always get voted off the court. I tried telling my dad this, but he didn’t care. He would berate me instead for “disobedience”. I tried playing 4 square but had to leave due to how toxic it became with cheaters and school enforced rules that made the game totally unrecognizable. Stuck with nothing to do I was left with no friends. With this I was forced to be with the other rejects by default (there were 3 i hanged out with for most of elementary school). I never got in trouble. Not even once. I had all A’s in my classes. I had no mental problems. These “rejects” I feel in all my years of schooling were the first and really only people I could relate too. They were had mental illness (mainly ADHD) or behavioral problems, but they weren’t bad kids. They were brilliant but just misunderstood as they didn’t have access to the help they needed. At a young age we were far beyond our years reading high school level books (we had a mandatory reading program and we had to read high school books unlike everyone else due to our placement test scores) as little kids and we would talk about science, Greek myths, the solar system, etc. These were the only people I felt I could fully relate to but sadly they all moved away and because of the lack of technology at the time (pre-iPhone era) as well as all of our parents not letting friends over we lost contact abruptly and we never saw each other again.
In middle school, the same situation with basketball held true but to a worse extent. When I would bring a ball to school the older kids would steal my ball and they would vote me off the court never choosing me for a team. This was not a matter of growing a spine. At first you would be by yourself. Then you would get a small 3 on 3 gaming going. No problem. Then next thing you know there is literally 50 kids invading the court stealing your ball and voting you out. I knew many of these kids from my local youth league and was better than many of them at this point. I was again never chosen and forced as an outcast because I wasn’t part of their group of friends neither popular on campus. I even tried out for the basketball team 2 of the 3 years of middle school and never made it as the coach only chose the kids he knew personally (he mainly knew them because they were always in trouble with him). Furthermore for much of middle school I was left with no friends and due to the situation with basketball and since I had nothing to do and so would be forced to walk laps mindlessly occasionally kicking the rocks ahead of me. I was bullied by this mentally unstable kid and he stole my friends away from me and after a year of drama I got my 2 friends back and we excommunicated him. Us 3 were best friends and we did everything together after that. Sadly we had to split up as 1 of my friends moved away and we all lessend
In 8th grade things finally started to improve. I ran a record mile time in the school that year and since everyone was competing with each other for it I went from being previously unheard to suddenly being a celebrity overnight as the time posted for everyone to see (I ran a 5:18 mile time). Suddenly people began to notice me and try to talk to me essentially asking me where I had been all of this time (in 7th grade I was also the mile record holder for my grade but nobody cared since I wasn’t truly number 1 as a kid a year older than me was faster). Suddenly the coach for the basketball team was practically begging to have me on the basketball team despite trying out for 2 years in a row because all because I was now in his class and I ran a fucking mile. He didn’t even know I tried out 2 years in a row! I couldn’t join my 8th grade year because I had begun to do club swim year round and the time commitment was too great. At the end of 8th grade we had an awards ceremony where everyone in my small town was present. I won more awards than anybody in my school with my entire town as witness and I became the talk of the town. This came as a complete shock to me as was previously unheard of throughout the school and to the teachers, as I never was in trouble, and I got a perfect 4.00 GPA all 3 years. Had I not ran the fastest mile, I would have never received all of those other awards as that was how all the teachers knew of my name. Other than this I was seen as just another face in the crowd. I was now being congratulated by everyone left and right and by people I didn’t even know. This newly found fame felt great for once as I was finally being recognized as something other than an outcast or a loser, but at the same time it was hurtful due to the shallowness of others as now many of those who outright alienated me were now claiming to be my “friend” despite the fact I didn’t even know their names. The only positive thing I got out of this experience was the fact that the special education students saw me as a hero, not only because of my feats but instead because of the fact I was one of the only few people that treated them as human beings as they were alienated much worse from those who had done the same to me. What I had learned from this whole experience was the only possible way for me to be valued as a person and for the opportunity to try to make more friends and develop my social skill and confidence. After all this was the only reason my toxic parents gave me any value as a person or any attention as I was forced into constant competition with my “Golden child” brother.
9th grade was very similar but very depressing. I was a Varsity Swimmer as a Freshman gaining both jealousy and fame from my peers and teammates. To begin the year I had no friends and was forced to sit once again with social outcasts but once I made the roster for the Varsity team I was now finally invited to sit with my teammates. For once, I finally had a group of “friends” (or so I thought) to sit with and be with. I had a sense of purpose for once. For this to happen, however, I was ill and depressed. In order to be able to train the long hours I did and keep up my 4.00 GPA I sacrificed my health and sleep. I was extremely sleep deprived going to school on average running on 4 to 6 hours of sleep per night. I was literally swimming as many hours per day as I was sleeping at night! I had many injuries and sinus infections throughout the year but it didn’t stop me. As a freshman I achieved a consideration time for CIF Division 4 and received many awards and accolades from my coach (not to mention earning a varsity letter). This was great and things were starting to look optimistic until my body finally gave out. At the end of my Freshman year my health was very poor. My body was in extreme pain all over and it got so bad I couldn’t walk and was hospitalized twice. Long story short I was diagnosed with Juvenile Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue syndrome. Due to my poor health I wasn’t able to attend regular high school the first semester of my Sophomore year and was forced to do an awful computer school program. My health was doing better 2nd semester and so I went back. Big mistake. Initially my “friends” were happy to see me again but they knew I still wasn’t able to preform the same as I did before. Once I lost my spot on the Varsity team due to my still recovering health they all of a sudden abandoned me and alienated me. And I was once again left with no friends. The only friend I still had (and still have to this day) was the one I still had from Middle school but due to conflicting schedules I rarely see him anymore. As the year went on my health began to decline again and my swimming career ended for good at the end of that season after 4 years of hard work. My team completely disassociated with me and I became nothing more than a ghost and once again a social outcast. My piece of shit parents began to see me nothing more as a financial burden due to my medical bills telling me how terrible of a person I am, refusing to give me the medical treatment I need, and completely abandoning me. The emotional abuse was always present before but with my poor health it got much worse forcing me to leave home and live with my grandparents. My parents complain to me that they have no time or money because of me and my medical bills despite the fact they are completely and financially incompetent.
My mother claims she is sorry that she is not rich and her efforts aren’t enough and I simply need to learn to live with the pain and I am wasting my time doing research and looking for an answer. My mom furthermore has the fucking nerve to tell me that I am asking her for a miracle and she’ll “pray for me.” Why don’t we have money??? BECAUSE SHE FUCKING SPEND MORE THAN YOU MAKE ON WORTHLESS SHIT! YOU TAKE ON MASSIVE CREDIT CARD DEBT, YOU DECLARED BANKRUPTCY TWICE, YOU DON’T PAY THE FUCKING BILLS (when I was young I literally remember there were days we didn’t have water because or AC because my parents didn’t pay the bill), AND INTEREST FROM LATE/FORGOTTEN PAYMENTS BUILDS UP! Now why don’t we have time??? APPARENTLY YOUR PRECIOUS WORK TIME IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR SON’S HEALTH AND RATHER THAN HELPING ME YOU SPEND YOUR SPARE TIME WINING AND DINING, SMOKING WITH, DRINKING WITH, AND FUCKING THOSE OLD, SHALLOW, PATHETIC EXCUSE FOR A HUMAN BEING, BOURGEOISE, BASTARDS!!!
As for my father he has the absolute audacity to tell me, “When you are a father, I hope you don’t have a sick kid.” He will never admit he is wrong about something and refuse to believe me when I tell him that my doctors are corrupt as hell which is another reason, my health isn’t improving. He berates me for the slightest of things due to his toxic, emotionally abusive personality and behavior. When I call him out on his childish behavior as well as my mom’s he resorts to gaslighting tactics to defend her despite the hell she has put him through as well as their messy in going divorce.
As you can see my parents are terrible people.
Fast forward to present day and I have been living with my grandparents and stuck in the house 24/7 due to my poor health and COVID. I am a Senior in high school this year and I have been on a home hospital schooling program for the past year as well as the remainder of this year. My parents are now threatening to not help me attend college due to my poor health and refuse to help me get the necessary medical care I need. I’ve lost all of my friends except for 1 due to my vanishing from the face of the Earth and loss of value as a human being because I can no long obtain awards or do sports.
Due to this and my inability to relate to others due to hyper maturity and completely different interests due to difference in intellect. Making friends, finding a girlfriend, and just talking to people in general is all but impossible to me and is absolute rocket science to me (actual rockets science is easy to me but that’s besides the point). I do not understand people in general as people are seemingly illogical in nature. Why do they make decisions based on their FEELINGS rather than pure logic alone? Why must we play time wasting games to talk about what we need and want rather than getting to the point directly as in the case with my parents? Why have people seen me as a social reject and outcast from day 1 of life? How are your supposed to make friends? How do you get a girlfriend? How do you make social/business connections and talk to people in general? My uncle tells me I need to manipulate my parents in order to survive and get the care I need, but literally with my life and wellbeing on the line I cannot do it due to my poor social skills and know how. It seems that given my circumstances, if I do not learn the answers quickly it will mean certain suffering for me.
My uncle (who is a social genius. He has learned the art due to his upbringing and career) says that I need to learn social communication and the different characters of people and how to respond to them accordingly by watching TV and doing I guess mainstream things. I’ve tried this approach to no avail. In TV shows the people are seemingly illogical, emotional, brash, and dramatic which makes no sense to me making it impossible to understand the science of social communication on how to do it and why to do it. As for the mainstream things kids my age enjoy, it is just not enjoyable to me. I don’t listen to the music they do because it isn’t good music. I don’t party go and party because I don’t get invited and it’s boring. Hell I don’t even speak the same colloquial English as them (though I understand them) and people just stare at me as if I am speaking ancient Latin or something. This being said how am I supposed to relate to other people my age?
I can talk in intellectual conversations just fine as to me it is straight forward and rational. For me doctors and intellectuals in general are very easy to talk to and it comes second nature to me. It makes sense just like actual rocket science. In an informal scenario, with small talk and casual conversation it doesn’t make any sense to me due to the illogicalness of it all. What the hell are you supposed to talk about if you don’t engage in the same activities or interests or think with emotions?
PLEASE HELP ME REDDIT! I AM IN DESPERATE NEED OF HELP!!! MY LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!

2020.10.01 03:40 ThePogatory Discussion/Rant about my journey.
I organized these ideas to the best of my ability.
I'm a 25 year old Asperger male living in America. My hobbies are breakdancing, yoga, lifting weights and Latin dancing (or anywhere with a dance floor.) I never chat with girls outside of Latin dancing because when I did it never lead to anywhere so I stick to the Latin dancing. Plus I feel a persona taking over me while Latin dancing. When I talk to girls normally I feel this invisible thing talking to them.
I lost interest/discipline in most passions I mentioned because I'm not getting laid. I'm slowly getting back into them, then I think what's the point? (Plus if a cute chick did yoga or some sort of hobby she'd be amazing and everyone would be curious about it.)
Why do men always have to be better in every way? Nothing is ever damn good enough for women.
I am working on myself but I feel nothing is ever good enough. I'm working on getting a driving license, studying for my online course, maintained my physique, have a place of my own, looking for work once my degree is done... Again women can just look cute or even average and they'll get all sorts of perks and attention for free. Not to mention they have so many options when it comes to sex/friends/"beta orbiters*.
We need to love ourselves respect ourselves, look good, maintain our look, work hard in life, work hard for a good job, need a car, money etc and still not get sexual attention. I'm so sick of living life as if I'm invisible. It's so unfair Holy Hell.
Women could just look cute and get that for free. No one will give a shit if they accept the self or not etc because they are liked mainly because of looks. And knowing I'll never be a cute girl makes me sad.
I would like a relationship but that needs two people to give each other the time of day. I rarely get eye contact from girls for that matter so I couldnt even hope for one. So I settled for sex which I'm not getting anyways. Knowing I'll never be a cute girl makes me sad.
I'm desperate to figure out how to get laid. I've been getting more kisses at the club but that isn't leading to sex. Sex is only a big deal when you never had it. (or in my case I paid for it but you know what I mean.)
If I don't try hard enough I'll get less chances than I do now (which is still nothing).
If my current self is good enough to get laid then it would have happened.
I need to know what you guys think because most people I discussed this with don't seem to agree with what I'm saying. Especially when it comes to the "Girls just have to look average/cute idea to get sex or all sorts of attention."

2020.09.30 04:43 philyswifty Chance Me Because I Am So Confused
I know this thread is often made fun of and full of incredibly qualified applicants who sometimes just want an ego booster, and I’m sorry if I come off as one. I am honestly just so confused with where I may stand in the crapshoot that is college admissions. At the end I also include some detail about my supplemental essays to certain schools because I think they may have an impact on the overall acceptance chance for that school.
Don’t be afraid to be brutally honest. I can take it, don’t worry.
Also sorry if this is long but I wanted to include as much information as possible.
DEMOGRAPHIC: White, middle class female from NH. School: top three public high school in NH Class Size: 521
INTENDED MAJOR: International Relations/Political Science or Linguistics
POSSIBLE SCHOOLS: Stanford, Columbia, NYU, Boston College, Georgetown, Boston University, Villanova, Ohio State, UC Berkeley, UCLA
STATS: SAT: 1460 GPA: GPA: 3.8 cumulative (school does not give unweighted or rank)
I have taken only AP, IB, and Honors classes throughout high school. I have received one C in IB Chemistry sophomore year because I doubled up with IB Biology and had combined my sophomore and junior year course load into one year (explained later)
Won a full ride U.S. Department of State Scholarship called the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) to study abroad in Germany for 11 months. Only 250 high school students across the US win this scholarship every year, and applicants live with local host families and attend a German high school with the title US Youth Ambassador. I did this my junior year of high school and am now fluent in German. The average acceptance rate is unknown but rumored to be anywhere from 3%-20% (lol I know it’s a wide range)
EXTRACURRICULARS AND SPORTS:
CBYX Year Long Exchange - Information above
Japan Exchange - Studied abroad in Japan for 5 weeks where I lived with a local host family and attended a language Institute to learn Japanese
Piano - I am an advanced level pianist and reached a grade 9 ABRSM level in 3 years. I have been able to play in a select orchestra in my German high school as well as participate in the prestigious music pathway there during my Exchange. I am currently trying to create a program to teach piano for free to intercity kids through the Boys and Girls Club. It is currently on hold due to corona though.
US Department of State Virtual Exchange Peer - a small volunteer organization open to alumni of department of State exchange programs where participants discuss different culturals, languages and political systems with people from around the world.
Language Learning - I often learn languages in my free time. I am currently fluent in only English, German, and Latin (as fluent as you can be with that language) and am proficient in Japanese.
Scuba Diving - I am an advanced open water scuba diver and am currently working towards my master diver certification.
Varsity Crew and Nordic Skiing - fastest rower at my high school and made varsity for both teams during my first year. 2nd place at NH Rowing Championship.
LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION:
1 is from my Latin teacher and it is very strong and speaks about my passion for politics and language (she let me read it) 1 is from my math teacher and I think it’s pretty stereotypical but I am not sure as I haven’t read it. 1 is from my Geography teacher in Germany and it is an incredibly strong essay. She said things along the lines of me making a positive lasting impression on the class and how I was quickly able to immerse myself in a community that was foreign to me upon arrival.
SPECIFIC COLLEGE SUPPLEMENTS:
I plan on applying either ED to Columbia or REA to Stanford
Stanford University: I have an overarching theme of linguistics and world culture with (what i believe to be) a pretty strong Intellectual Vitality Essay. I show my overarching theme of travel/culture/language through my common app which is about my challenges of learning German (for example telling a baker I wanted to have sex rather than I want 6 bread rolls). I also share about my injury which made me lose feeling in my right arm and hand and how I overcame it and taught myself how to move again regardless of having no feeling. Also, I wrote the “Why Stanford” essay to the tune of Stanford’s fight song.
Columbia University: I wrote the “Why Columbia” essay the same way I did Stanford’s: to the tune of the fight song. I am submitting an extra video of me playing and singing it on piano as I hand wrote the music for it. I am very proud of this one.
Given all this information do you think I have a chance at some of the colleges listed above, more specifically, my early schools of either Columbia or Stanford? What are some colleges I should look at if I have no chance?
I know this was long so thank you so much if you reply or even made it this far!! <3

2020.09.29 09:44 shortwavebubble Ormond College: a review
I keep seeing posts asking about life in residential colleges, so I thought I would share my experience of Ormond College.
I think that your time at Ormond depends mainly on how well you tolerate social conformity. If you tend to trust authority figures, and if you’re attracted to group identity and tradition, then you will probably love Ormond – it might be the best time of your life, and you may well send your kids there and donate lavishly. But if you’re not that kind of person, then it’s possible that you will despise the place
For a start, the social atmosphere at Ormond was very different from that of the average student residence – it felt like a continuation of private school. We had a
College Master who gave speeches and Latin benedictions at the regular
formal dinners that students would attend in
academic gowns. We had a
Student Club Chair and
Student Committee. There was even a college anthem. Nearly everyone was in a very narrow age range – from late teens to very early twenties. We were lectured about what it “means” to be an Ormondian, and about the college’s five “core values” (Community, Heritage, Integrity, Learning, and Diversity). For most residents, this fed the warm and fuzzy feeling that they were part of a privileged club. On the other hand, you might cringe at people’s readiness to indulge in what looks like a load of pretense. The frequent mention of “diversity” might sound comical – like your exclusive $900-a-week college is missing the point and overcompensating, or like its members are just trying to assuage their personal guilt about being white and/or wealthy.
There was also an implicit social hierarchy within the Ormond community. For example, rituals performed by the student leaders in previous O-Weeks include:
- Keeping their own names secret from the newcomers, but labelling each newcomer with an unexplained nickname that they are expected to wear around their neck for the week
- Handing out an O-Week timetable written in gibberish and in-jokes, so that none of the new residents know what is happening
- Social experiments where new students are peer-pressured into throwing buckets of water onto passers-by in public (the “passers-by” are actors from Ormond, but the newcomers don’t know that)
- Tricking the new residents into thinking that they have to pass a difficult exam on the last day in order to gain admission to the Ormond Students’ Club
- Tricking the new students into lining up outside so that paint can be dumped on them from the balcony above
During semester, there were exclusive student clubs with parties and common rooms that you couldn’t enter as a first-year unless you’d been specifically invited. Postgraduate residents received better living quarters in a separate facility. Matters like how to allocate room preferences (there was a significant variation in room quality, with no difference in price) were settled by a “seniority list” – a comprehensive pecking order that detailed exactly who was allowed to shit on whom, and from precisely what height. Your level of seniority was calculated mainly by how long you’d been at Ormond, and by your rank in the Students’ Club (and, in my experience, by whether you had mates on the “seniority committee”). The justification was that allocating rooms in this way prevented the best rooms from being monopolised by the rich... but this ignored the fact that only the super-rich could stay at Ormond long enough to rack up that kind of seniority.
Most people insisted that all this social engineering was good for “bonding”, and that “it’s not as bad as O-Week at [insert rival college’s name] where they [insert crime against humanity]”. But the results were predictable: people would remark how nobody appeared to interact outside their year group. The postgraduate residents would roam in self-conscious packs, eating at the unofficial “postgrad table” in the dining hall, and keeping to themselves. And anyone who had chosen to start their undergraduate degree even slightly
beyond their teenage years was widely seen as an intimidating, creepy immigrant from the land of People Over 20. It was pretty sad, actually – it felt less like genuine human interaction, and more like a collection of high-school cliques.
Speaking of insular and hierarchical societies
, they tend to be convenient places for (alleged) sexual assailants, of whom Ormond has quite the history
. There’s no knowing whether the rate of incidents is indeed greater at Ormond than it is among the wider student population, but I think it suffices to say that it wouldn’t be of any consolation either way. Nearly every Ormondian (in my experience) knows of at least one (alleged) sexual assault that occurred during their time there, and I think that that’s just the tip of an enormous iceberg
. Applicant screening, ethics workshops, and reporting procedures notwithstanding – there is (allegedly) a persistent population of superficially friendly, low-empathy types at Ormond who, deep down, don’t care about your consent. Nobody enjoys talking about this, but it feels dishonest not to mention it.
But OK, let’s look at the perks of being at Ormond. You get academic tutorials, study rooms, lounges, a gym, a rat-infested library, parties, bands, theatre, sport, guest speakers, seminars, clubs, and committees… all of which is already available on campus
to university students who have an ounce of curiosity and initiative. The only big difference is that the Ormond Students’ Club is ridiculously cashed-up (membership was compulsory and cost many hundreds of dollars, and we still had to pay for event tickets), so they can afford an extravagance that you’ll find either impressive or tasteless. But that aside, even the inherent benefits of living in a student residence – the catering, the location, the everyone-knows-everyone, the supervised freedom from mummy and daddy, and the relentless social proximity that makes you feel like you have friends – exist at many other places for cheaper (even slightly further along College Crescent). Is there anyone at Ormond who is at least somewhat interesting and authentic? I think so. But do you need to spend a year at Ormond just to find people like that? Are you even likelier
to find such people there? Or does the Ormond brand, with its promise to spoon-feed you camaraderie and social prestige, look more attractive to the boring, the spoilt, and the insecure? I think that’s the $32,000 question
TL;DR: Ormond College talks the diversity game, but in reality caters to wealthy, impressionable teenagers fresh from private school. If you’re that, you’ll probably love it. If you’re not that, you might wonder what the fuck is wrong with people.
