A quote from Martin Luther King that Harris (and this subreddit) should reflect on [relating to both the War on Terror and violence/looting occurring at protests against racism]

2020.09.25 16:39 RalphOnTheCorner A quote from Martin Luther King that Harris (and this subreddit) should reflect on [relating to both the War on Terror and violence/looting occurring at protests against racism]

Hi folks,
It seems that lots of people want to share quotes of Martin Luther King's words in this current moment, including users in this subreddit and Harris himself. For example, here is Harris in episode 207 (the lengthy monologue about Black Lives Matter protests, race and policing etc.):
Many people have been circulating a half quote from Martin Luther King Jr. about riots being “the language of the unheard.” They’re leaving out the part where he made it clear that he believed riots harmed the cause of the black community and helped the cause of racists.
The future we want is not one in which we have all become passionate anti-racists. It’s not a future in which we are forever on our guard against the slightest insult—the bad joke, the awkward compliment, the tweet that didn’t age well. We want to get to a world in which skin color and other superficial characteristics of a person become morally and politically irrelevant. And if you don’t agree with that, what did you think Martin Luther King Jr was talking about?
Now, you might agree with me about the goal and about how a post-racial society would seem, but you might disagree about the path to get there—the question of what to do next. In fact, one podcast listener wrote to me recently to say that while he accepted my notion of a post-racial future, he thinks it’s just far too soon to talk about putting racial politics behind us. He asked me to imagine just how absurd it would have been to tell Martin Luther King Jr, at the dawn of the civil rights movement, that the path beyond racism requires that he become less and less obsessed with race.
That seems like a fair point, but Coleman Hughes has drawn my attention to a string of MLK quotes that seem to be just as transcendent of racial identity politics as I’m hoping to be here. You can see these quotations on his Twitter feed. None of those statements by King would make sense coming out of Black Lives Matter at the moment.
Now I recently finished reading a book called The Muslims Are Coming! by Arun Kundnani, an excellent book I recommend to everybody here, which I might make a post about at some later date. At the end of the final chapter of the book, Kundnani presents an excerpt of a speech King gave on April 4 1967 (a year to the day before he was assassinated) in which he outlined his opposition to the Vietnam war and linked it to the struggle for civil rights in America. (You can read the full speech here.) Here is Kundnani setting things up:
Anyone who seeks to extinguish the lives of civilians in acts of terrorism deserves universal contempt. But to condemn terrorism without hypocrisy today requires also a questioning of the normalized violence of the war on terror. The question of terrorist violence carried out by extremist or ideological nonstate actors is inseparable from the wider background of state violence that is defined as normal, necessary, and rational. They feed each other in a savage cycle of war and murder. Martin Luther King Jr. well understood how individual violence at home is intricately linked to state violence abroad – although this part of his message is downplayed in official celebrations of his life. Speaking in 1967, he told an audience at Riverside Church in New York:
Here Kundnani quotes King:
As I have walked among the desperate, rejected, and angry young men, I have told them that Molotov cocktails and rifles would not solve their problems. I have tried to offer them my deepest compassion while maintaining my conviction that social change comes most meaningfully through nonviolent action. But they asked, and rightly so, “What about Vietnam?” They asked if our own nation wasn’t using massive doses of violence to solve its problems, to bring about the changes it wanted. Their questions hit home, and I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today: my own government.
Then we’re back to Kundnani for the last paragraph of the chapter:
His efforts at what might now be called “preventing violent extremism” among young Americans depended on first opposing the violence of US foreign policy, a point that remains as valid today in the era of the terror war’s global battlefield. Equally relevant today is King’s understanding that “the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism” are interwoven in societies that place “profit motives and property rights” above human beings. It is time once again to heed King’s message of peace by ending the war on terror, and unravelling the racisms and totalitarianisms it fostered.
I think this MLK quote (and indeed a lot of the speech from which it originates) would be really useful for Harris (and this subreddit) to reflect on, both in terms of the war on terror and in terms of making comments about looters etc. during protests. Unfortunately Harris is generally either supportive of, silent about, or ambivalent towards the state violence perpetrated or supported by the US on the world stage. If such overwhelming force Harris is (in general, I’m aware in not literally every single specific case) either supportive of, silent about, or ambivalent towards, then following King’s thinking (and Kundnani’s words) I can’t find Harris a persuasive or compelling figure when discussing either terrorism and the war on terror, or the issue of looting or criminal behavior occurring at protests against racism.
What do you all think about King’s quote and how it relates to Harris and his general support of or ambivalence towards massive state violence by the United States? Does it undermine his other positions or make him less of a compelling voice, or do you not find this a problem or deficiency?

This is Book 4: Boarding School Break: Happy Thanksgiving
[Book 2: Boarding School Beginnings] [Book 3: Boarding School Boyfriends]

Big. Enormous. Large.
My friend lives in a mansion.
Huge. Colossal. Vast.
Pat took Melinda to the top of the right staircase and a couple of steps down a corridor before he stopped and faced her. He ran his finger through her hair, saying “I missed you, Daphne.”
He left his hand behind her head as he pulled her towards him for a kiss. Melinda placed her hands on her chest and gently pushed him away.
His face was full of concern. “What’s wrong?”
Melinda closed her eyes, fighting back tears. “So many things.”
Pat looked around, then took Melinda’s hand and led her to the opposite end of the house to the second door on the right. The door was closed, but Pat entered without knocking.
“I’m cleaning,” Walter said, jumping off a chair. “Oh, it’s you.” He sat back down, but did not pick up the remote control he had obviously just dropped.
“We’re not here.” Pat glared at his brother as he led Melinda to some bean bag chairs in the corner of the room. Melinda looked around, noticing a large television on one wall with more bean bag chairs scattered around the room. There were remote controls and games all over the floor, and some plates and cups stacked on a table.
Walter pouted, turning to Melinda. “What’re you doing here?”
“Your mom thought maybe you’d clean your room if you knew I was here.”
“She must not know me. But, why are you here? Like, at our house?”
Melinda looked cautiously at Pat. “Well…”
“Oh, man! You came to see him?” Walter did not hide his whine.
“No. Your mom called mine last night to invite me over. To have a playdate with you.”
Walter raised his eyebrows. “She didn’t.”
“Well, my mom didn’t call it a playdate, but yeah. She pretty much did.”
“So, why did she send me up here and make Pat stay?”
“Because I had already told my mother about me and Pat and she was uncomfortable. So, we just had to have a really awkward conversation with our moms.”
“Okay. Never inviting a girlfriend over. That’s good to know. Who’s up for WTTE?”
“Not now, doofus. Go back to your game.” Pat glared at his brother before turning to Melinda. He took her hand and gently pulled her into one of the chairs as he sat in another. “What’s wrong, Daphne?”
She kept her voice low. “Did you get my text?”
Pat shook his head. “When?”
“Last night.”
Pat checked his phone, again shaking his head. “Nothing. I saw you had tried to chat, but when I called back, there was no answer.”
“My phone died. What’s going on with you and Poppy Sommers?” She could feel the tears stinging her eyes, but she refused to let them fall.
“Poppy? Nothing. Why?”
Melinda saw something in Pat’s expression that she had never seen before and it hurt her. She responded very quietly. “My mom’s right. You are a good actor. There’s something you’re not telling me.”
“Daphne, I have no idea what you’re talking about. Can you please start at the beginning?”
Melinda pulled out her phone and showed him the image Joey had shown her the night before. Pat gave it a cursory glance before returning it with a shrug.
“Poppy and I were together last summer. You knew that.”
“No, I didn’t. But, this isn’t from this summer. This is from the other day.”
Pat looked at the article more carefully, scrolling slowly enough that Melinda realized he must be reading it. Meanwhile, Walter must have been listening to the conversation, because he suddenly reappeared reading over Pat’s shoulder.
Pat muttered a curse under his breath. “I’m gonna kill Cynthia,” he grumbled as he stormed out of the room.
Melinda tried to remain nonchalant as Walter took his brother’s seat. “Who’s Cynthia?”
“Our agent. You okay?”
When Melinda shook her head, afraid her voice would betray her, Walter leaned over to give her a comforting hug. “He’s crazy about you. He would never cheat on you.”
“What’s going on?” asked a voice standing above them. “I just ran into Pat and he looked ready to kill someone.”
Melinda watched Meghan, an eighteen-year-old version of her mother, gracefully fold herself into another chair.
Walter handed Melinda’s phone to his sister, who read the article carefully.
“That twit. I warned Pat she was bad news, but did he listen? Nooo.”
“It says they’re….” Melinda could not bring herself to quote the article.
Meghan glanced at the phone. “They’ve rekindled their romance after a five-month hiatus.”
Melinda nodded. “What’s high-ate-us mean?”
Walter smiled, used to translating vocabulary words for his friend. “It basically means a break in a routine. It’s a common term in Hollywood and appropriate for this article. Except for the fact that it’s a lie.”
Meghan smiled kindly at Melinda. “Lemme guess. You saw this and thought Pat was back together with Crazy Poppy?”
When Melinda nodded, Meghan turned to her brother. “Go. It’s girl time. I suggest you go find Pat. He looked a little unhinged when I passed him in the hall.”
Walter squeezed Melinda’s shoulder before following his sister’s instructions. Meghan took her brother’s seat.
“I’m not about to gossip about my brother’s previous girlfriends. But, I’m pretty sure he’s confided in me about all the girls he’s liked, both crushes and actual girlfriends. He and Poppy were spending a lot of time together when they filmed Romeo and Juliet.”
“I thought they were dating. Romeo and Juliet,” Melinda interrupted.
“Jarrod and Poppy?” Meghan shook her head. “The producers thought it would make good publicity to have a real life romance between them, and they got along okay enough. But, Poppy had her eyes on Pat. And, I think he liked that she was going out of her way to spend time with him. I warned him she’s crazy. Literally crazy. But, he didn’t listen to me. After the movie wrapped, they kept spending time together.”
“How long were they together?” Melinda tried to keep her voice light, even though she was finding it difficult to digest.
Meghan shrugged. “You have to understand. Poppy’s not completely right in the head. She gets these strange ideas and believes they’re true and tries to convince everyone else they are, too. Her mom is her agent and tries to keep a lid on things, but every so often, Poppy’s crazy side comes out.”
Melinda sniffled but held back the tears as Meghan continued. “Pat always insisted he and Poppy weren’t serious. But, they hung out a lot for a few weeks. Despite whatever he told me, I was never convinced Pat liked Poppy, just the attention she gave him. He tried to break it off not long before he left for Hawaii.”
“Tried to?”
“I’m not sure of the details. We were at this party. They had disappeared for a while. When they came back, he told me he had broken up with her. A few minutes later, she walks right up to him, wraps herself around his arm, and starts talking to someone as if she had been part of the conversation all along. It was as if they hadn’t broken up.”
“So they got back together?” Melinda feared the answer.
Meghan giggled. “No! Pat wanted nothing to do with Poppy. But, I’m not sure Poppy figured that out. My best guess? Poppy needs attention so she leaked this story to the media. She probably believes it, too.”
“Does he still care about her?” Melinda asked the question without meaning to.
Meghan smiled. “If he even thinks about her any more, my guess is that he pities her. He has never cared for a girl as deeply as he cares for you. He’s crazy about you.”
“That’s what Walter said.”
Meghan frowned. “Sadly, I think Pat’s starting to confide more in Walter than me. Probably because they’re at school together and I’m not. But, when Walter was still ignoring Pat, he called me. Invited me to come to campus for the day to see a ballet.”
Melinda smiled, knowing she was referring to her performance in the Nutcracker earlier that month, as Meghan continued.
“Pat and I had a long talk the next day. I could tell how much he cared about you. I’ve never seen him this happy with anyone before.”
Walter returned with a still-fuming Pat behind him, each of them flopping into the bean bag chairs.
“I tried to contact Cynthia. She’s probably still sleeping. Stupid time difference.”
Meghan rolled her eyes. “We’ll call her later I need to have a few words with her myself.”
“About this Poppy thing?” asked Walter.
“No. Nightshade.” Meghan spit the word out like she had eaten something disgusting.
Walter tried to change the subject. “Well, since we’re waiting for LA to wake up, who’s up for a game of WTTE?”
“What’s WTTE?” Melinda turned to Pat.
He shook his head. “It’s easier to show you.”
Melinda followed her friends to a room next door, with a pool table, a bookshelf full of board games, and a large octagonal table with a green-felt top. Pat led Melinda to the octagonal table, where he and his brother wordlessly picked up the table top and flipped it over to reveal a wooden surface. Pat walked to the bookshelf and returned with some pencils, lined paper, and graph paper, while everyone else chose seats at the table.
“What’re we playing now?” Melinda asked.
“Weddas, the Travel Edition,” Walter sounded proud.
“Someone,” Pat said emphatically, glaring at Walter, “forgot to bring home Weddas. So, we created a travel version.”
Melinda raised her eyebrows. At the beginning of the school year, Melinda had explained to Walter how she kept a vocabulary journal to learn new words, and that it had become especially useful at her new school when she was overwhelmed by her peers’ superior vocabularies. After his first visit home, Walter introduced her to Weddas, a game his family had invented. It involved using letter tiles to create a crossword puzzle of words.
After returning to school, Pat had often joined their game and Melinda quickly learned the boys loved to play the game daily, sometimes multiple times a day, if they had the time.
“You couldn’t play a regular board game like normal families?” she suggested.
Meghan laughed. “That was my suggestion. My brothers are obsessed with this game.”
“So, how do you play the travel edition?”
Pat held up the graph paper. “Well, when its your turn, you write a word on the page. You can only write seven letters, as if you had tiles, but you can write any seven letters you want. Each letter gets its own square. On this page,” he held up a sheet of lined paper, “we write everyone’s words and keep track of which letters are used. You can only use a letter six times.”
“Wow. That is…”
“Inventive?” suggested Pat.
“Ingenious?” suggested Walter.
“Pathetic,” finished Melinda with a smile as Meghan burst into laughter.

It took a few turns for Melinda to settle into the game, but Melinda was finding this new version a little easier, since she could just think of any word she wanted, instead of trying to make words using the letters in front of her. For once, she found it easy to hold a conversation while playing the game.
Melinda turned to Meghan as she waited for her turn. “So, when are you going back to New York?”
“My roommate went home for Thanksgiving and I didn’t want to stay in the apartment alone all week. I have to go back for a doctor’s appointment tomorrow, and I just plan on staying in the city.”
Pat turned to Melinda. “So, did your mom say how long you’re visiting?”
Melinda shook her head.
“She left,” Walter said. “When I left to find you, I ran into Mom. You can spend the day and we’ll take you home after dinner.”
“Sick,” Pat smiled. He turned to his sister. “Did you say you needed to talk to Cynthia, too?”
Meghan rolled her eyes. “Nightshade.”
Pat and Walter both shuddered. When they said nothing, Melinda asked, “What’s Nightshade?”
“My agent passed me a script. She does it all the time and I’m not sure Mom even knows I have it. So, I read through it, and it’s just wrong on so many levels. First of all, there’s a ton of cursing. I don’t swear. Like, ever.”
“She’s like you.” Walter nodded towards Melinda.
Meghan smiled as she continued. “I would possibly, probably not, but maybe, consider the movie if that were its only flaw. But, there are so many things wrong with it. Like, there are multiple scenes where I would be…”
“Naked,” Pat smiled. “The word is naked.” He turned to Melinda. “She thinks that’s a bad word, too.”
“She’s like you.” Walter again nodded towards Melinda.
Melinda smiled. “Does your agent know how you feel about those kinds of movies?”
Meghan shrugged. “I thought she did. But, she still sent me this. When I told her I didn’t think it was for me, she said that now that I was eighteen, I should consider...how did she put it? Basically, I should be in movies that are for an adult audience, not a kid audience. Shed my good-girl image.”
“But, it’s not an image, right? I mean, I get the impression you’re like your brothers. You really are a good, wholesome girl. And I don't mean that to be insulting. It's something to be proud of.”
“Is she this insightful with everyone?” Meghan asked Walter.
“Pretty much. Except when it comes to boyfriends. She has a horrible track record there.”
“Ouch,” Pat put a hand to his chest, pretending to be insulted.
Melinda shook her head. “No. Walter’s right. I told you about my disasters.”
Pat smiled at Melinda, playing with her hair. “Actually, you never mentioned why you broke up with Townie.”
“You looked at me.” Melinda smiled, remembering how her ex-boyfriend was jealous of the time Melinda spent with her guy friends.
Pat smiled back. “No, seriously. Why’d you break up?”
“She is serious,” Walter said. “He got jealous you looked at her.”
“Wow. You really do have horrible taste in guys. What does that say about me?”

Although their game did not take long, by the time Melinda and her friends were finished, everyone was growing hungry. They headed down to the kitchen, where Walter pressed a button on the wall beside the doorway.
“Mom, do we have anything for lunch?”
Mrs. Evan’s voice emanated from the speaker beside the button. “Lunchmeat. Have some sandwiches. I think there’s some canned soup if you want to heat it. We’re having meatloaf for supper, with potatoes. Is that okay with Melinda?”
Walter held the button for her to respond.
“It sounds delicious.” She was unable to recall the last time she had even had meatloaf and decided it was probably before she had attended Hartfield, because she was certain she had not eaten any at school.
Walter began taking meats and condiments from the fridge and Pat retrieved the bread and canned soup from a walk-in closet Melinda assumed was the pantry. When Meghan went to a cabinet to get them all plates, Melinda began to feel useless.
“How can I help?”
Meghan pointed to a cabinet. “Cups. Get drinks. I want water.”
“Me, too,” chorused the boys.
“Tap?” Melinda knew the tap water in her parents’ home was nearly undrinkable.
“Use the fridge,” Pat instructed her. “It’s got a filter.”
So, Melinda used the dispenser in the front of the refrigerator to get four glasses of ice water, which she carried to the breakfast nook. Meghan had set two plates on one side of the table, and a plate in front of each of the remaining benches. Melinda placed a glass at each plate, then returned to the counter where Pat was dumping cans of soup into bowls and placing each one in the microwave.
“Here,” he smiled at her as he handed her a bowl. “This one’s chicken noodle.”
Melinda placed the bowl in the center of the table, finding Walter had selected a seat and begun making his sandwich. When she returned to the table with a second bowl (minestrone), Meghan had sat on the middle bench and was smearing mayonnaise on her bread. Melinda noticed the plates had been rearranged so that she and Pat would be sitting together on the bench facing Walter.
Melinda sat down after bringing the bowl of Italian Wedding soup to the table and Pat joined them a moment later with another bowl of chicken noodle soup. Melinda waited to make a sandwich, mesmerized by the one Walter was building. He had spread deli mustard on a slice of bread, then placed a slice of American cheese, a slice of salami, a slice of cheddar cheese, a slice of ham, a slice of provolone cheese, and a slice of turkey. He then spread mayonnaise on two sides of another slice of bread and layered it with the same cold cuts before spreading more mustard on a third slice of bread to complete the sandwich.
“Where’s the lettuce and tomato?” Meghan asked him.
Luckily, she had caught him before he had a chance to take a bite. He picked up his sandwich. “I don’t want any.”
“But, I do.” Meghan stared at the turkey on her bread. “Was there any in the fridge?”
Walter shrugged as he took a giant bite. “Prob’ly.”
Meghan simply shook her head in disgust as she went to look for the toppings. “Melinda, seriously? How are you friends with him? He’s so gross!”
“It’s not so much that we’re friends. It’s more that we have an arrangement. I let him copy my math homework and he helps me understand my Latin.”
“You also drag me to church,” Walter added.
“Oh, yeah. That’s because I have to watch you eat.”
Everyone laughed as they continued to build their sandwiches. A moment later, Walter asked, “Does anyone else want the chicken noodle soup?”
“There’s two,” Pat pointed out.
“Not for long. Unless someone else wants some.”
“Me!” Melinda announced and gently slid one of the bowls closer to her before her friend could take it.
Meghan chose not to have any soup, so Pat ended up eating both of the others in addition to a ham and cheese sandwich. Walter, meanwhile, had a second sandwich, this time only one layer.
“So,” Walter said as he took a large bite. “Now what should we do? More WTTE?”
“NO!” declared both girls adamantly.
“Melinda didn’t come to play board games all day,” Pat told his brother.
“What would Melinda like to do?” asked Walter.
“I have no idea. I had no plans for today.”
“We could watch a movie,” suggested Pat.
“We could play video games,” suggested Walter.
“That might be fun,” Melinda said.
They finished their lunches, making sure to return all the food to the fridge and even placing their dirty dishes in the dishwasher before returning to the playroom. They sat in the bean bag chairs on the floor while Walter turned on the television and gaming system and passed out the remotes.
The Evans family owned a large selection of video games in all genres, but Melinda examined the boxes carefully until she found one that she thought might look interesting. She held it up.
“Can you teach me to play this one?”
Pat smiled as Walter groaned. “That’s my favorite game. Walter hates it because he always loses.”
Pat put the game into the system and explained the basics. The screen split into four zones, one for each player. Melinda had to select which cartoon character she wanted to be, then select her race car. She could customize the wheels and body, but she elected to stick with the default settings, not knowing what else to select.
Pat told her there were many tracks they could race, but he would choose an easy one while she learned how to play. He showed her which buttons she should press to move and the game started.
As they drove, the players collected special items, which could be used to help them in the race. Walter threw an oil barrel that caused slicks all over the track, causing Melinda to turn around and lose her place. Pat threw bananas that would have had a similar effect, except Melinda was able to swerve around the peel at the last second. Meghan collected a star that allowed her to zoom along at double speed and pass nearly everyone. Melinda collected a clock, which Pat showed her how to throw. It caused everyone to freeze for five seconds while she continued to move, allowing her to pass the finish line while everyone was still frozen, since she had thrown it during the final lap.
Melinda had fun playing with her friends, even when Walter changed the game to one where they had to work together to defeat some evil elf lord. After a while, Walter was the only one alive, but he did not seem to notice. Meghan left, declaring she had something better to do, although she had no idea what it could be. Pat beckoned Melinda to join him in his chair, where he put his arm around her. She snuggled close as he whispered in her ear.
“I missed you, Daphne. I miss holding you.”
Melinda said nothing for a while, but simply watched Walter’s game on the screen while Pat played with her hair absently as he tried to help his brother..
“Dude! Not the arrows!”
“I know, I know!” Walter cursed under his breath as he pressed buttons furiously. His bow and arrow turned into a sword and he was able to lop off the head of a creature Melinda thought might have been a tree, but she really could not tell.
“That was close.” Walter sat back as on the screen his character traveled through the woods to destroy the next creature he encountered.
Melinda turned to Pat. She laced her fingers behind his neck as she returned his gentle kiss. They held each other close until Melinda could no longer endure the warm feeling that filled her entire body to bursting every time she kissed Pat. They sat with their foreheads touching for a moment while Melinda waited for her heartbeat to return to normal.
“I missed you, too.” They kissed for quite a while until Walter began cursing at the screen again.

Walter never seemed to tire of defeating the elf lord, so Pat offered to give Melinda a tour of the house. He explained that most of the second floor was their bedrooms, although the two doors they had passed at the top of the stairs were adjoining offices for his parents. They turned left out of the playroom and walked slowly down the corridor, which was lined with windows to overlook the pool below. The hallway opened into a lounge area with a small table in front of two bathrooms whose lights were off and doors were ajar.
Pat led Melinda through the door at the end of the hallway into what could only be described as a movie theater. The enormous room had dark walls and a sloping floor, with a massive screen mounted to the wall at the bottom of the room. Melinda counted four rows, each containing five cushy red seats. In front of Melinda was an actual concession stand, with an empty popcorn machine, a small refrigerator with bottles of soda and water, and a display case of movie theater candy.
“Wow,” was all Melinda could say.
“My mom designed this room to have movie screenings. Or, we’ll use it to watch Dad’s music videos. But, this is also where we like to watch movies, too.”
“Not, like, regular television, right?”
“Honestly, none of us watch too much tv. Neogenesis is a must in here, though. The surround sound is incredible. Other than that, I’m not sure any of us watch anything else.” Pat shrugged. “Come on. I wanna show you the rest of the house.”
They walked down the sloping aisle to an exit at the front of the room that opened to the pool deck. The indoor pool had four full-sized lap lanes, which were marked on the pool floor but did not have the bubbles floating in the water to separate the lanes. The room was a little too warm for Melinda in her sweater and jeans, but she said nothing.
“There’s a sauna and hot tub in that room over there,” Pat gestured towards to a glass room just beside the theater, “but, we’re not allowed in it most of the time.”
“What are those doors?” Melinda pointed across the way.
“Those are the guest rooms. Their bathrooms open out to the pool. We keep swim suits in the dresser in case people want to go swimming and forgot to bring a suit. Like, you didn’t bring one today because who swims in November, right?”
Melinda giggled and Pat pointed beside the guest rooms. “Over there,” he pointed beside the guest rooms, “is the library. I can show it to you later, if you want.” There were plenty of windows in the library, so Melinda was able to espy bookshelves lining the walls, as well as a couple of study desks and some comfy-looking chairs.
“It kind of looks like the study room at school.” Melinda and Walter did their homework together in the same library room most evenings. Pat had joined them enough times to know the room to which she was referring.
“Yeah, it kinda does. I think that’s why Walter’s more apt to study there than in his dorm. It’s like being home. When we were homeschooled, the library was our schoolroom.”
Pat led Melinda past a glass-walled room, through the sliders into the living area Melinda had seen when she first arrived. Instead of turning left into the kitchen, however, Pat led her through another set of double glass doors into the glass-walled room she had seen from the pool deck.
“This is the gym.”
Melinda was facing a large circular contraption that had a bench in the center and a stack of weights on the side. Melinda had seen commercials for smaller versions on television, but had never seen anything this large or complex. It was too complicated for Melinda to figure out how it worked, but according to the pictures on the poster affixed to the wall beside it, you could use this machine could be used to tone over twenty different body regions.
Beside the home gym was an old fashioned weight bench with a rack of free weights beside it. There was a mirror with some mats and exercise balls beside it. Across the room, there were five cardio machines, some of which Melinda could not identify, all facing the pool, although each had some sort of computer screen.
“Why is there a screen on the treadmill?” Melinda pointed to the one machine whose name she did know.
Pat smiled. “You can program it to any setting you want. So, if you want to take a run through the woods, you would just press this button and voila, you’re in the woods.”
“Whose room is this?”
“We all use it. Mom and Meghan like the machines and the home gym. Dad likes to use the home gym, but he prefers to run outside if the weather’s nice. Walter and I like the weight bench, and only use the treadmill in the winter.”
“Where do you go outside? Your road didn’t look that great for running.”
“Did you see the track going around the house? The driveway is kind of part of it, but it goes around the house itself. The track is about a quarter mile.”
“I knew Walter liked to run. I didn’t realize you joined him.”
“Yup. I created a loop around the campus. I showed it to Walter.”
“But, you’re going to stop that when we get back, right? I mean, it's too cold to run.”
Pat shook his head. “Nah. We’ll keep running outside unitl the paths become too icy. Then, we’ll switch to the indoor track.
Melinda just shook her head. “No wonder you guys are always eating!”
“Hey! Don’t compare me to that gourmand!”
“Gourmand?”
“Someone who really likes to eat. Usually excessively.”
“Oh! That is a perfect description of Walter! I’m gonna save that word for Weddas.”
Beside the gym was Mr. Evans’ music room, which was actually a small studio. In addition to an upright piano and a wall of guitars, it held some music stands and a mixing board. Pat explained that the room was soundproofed and completely wired with microphones, so the band could record in here as they practiced. Sometimes their father would record music as he wrote it, so he could share it with his bandmates later.
“That’s so cool,” was all Melinda could think to say.
Pat led her back to the living room. “That’s pretty much the whole house. There’s a dining room off the kitchen, but we only use that for company. So, what d’ya wanna do now?”
Melinda thought for a little while. “How warm’s the pool?”
Pat frowned. “The filter’s broken. I wanted to swim this morning, after my run, but Mom said we can’t use it until the filter is fixed. I say we watch a movie.”
“In that theater?”
“Well, yeah. That’s the best place to watch movies.”
“Um, is your mom gonna freak out if you and I watch a movie alone there?”
Pat considered a moment, then went to the intercom Walter had used earlier. “Melinda and I are going watch a movie. Anyone want to join us?”

His face full of concern.“What’s wrong?”

Open Letter to Steve Huffman and the Board of Directors of Reddit, Inc – If you believe in standing up to hate and supporting black lives, you need to act
Dear Steve,
On June 1, you shared a letter on Reddit’s blog “Remember the Human – Black Lives Matter”. In this letter, you claim “as Snoos, we do not tolerate hate, racism, and violence, and while we have work to do to fight these on our platform, our values are clear.”
As of today, neither you nor any other Reddit admins have shared this letter anywhere on reddit.com. However, the response to this message was swift on Twitter, where you were rightfully labeled as hypocritical based on your long and well-recorded history of defending racism and white supremacy on this site.
Among the many responses was this message from former CEO of Reddit, Ellen Pao.
I am obligated to call you out: You should have shut down the_donald instead of amplifying it and its hate, racism, and violence. So much of what is happening now lies at your feet. You don't get to say BLM when reddit nurtures and monetizes white supremacy and hate all day long
Many others shared links and screenshots of your past statements saying “Open racism and slurs are fine to post on Reddit”.
The problem of Reddit’s leadership supporting and providing a platform for racist users and hateful communities has long been an issue. Nearly six years ago, dozens of subreddits signed the original open letter to the Reddit admins calling for action. While the Reddit admins acknowledged the letter and said it was a high priority to address this issue, extremely little has been done in the intervening years.
On June 5, you shared this update on /Announcements, Upcoming changes to our content policy, our board, and where we’re going from here. In the post, you stated that there is a need for continued adjustments of Reddit’s content policy to address racism and that this remains a priority. These continued statements that you hear us, that this is a priority, or that you are working on it are not enough. It has been five years since your return as CEO and this still remains Reddit’s most glaring problem.
Steve, if you and Reddit genuinely care about the values of standing up to racism and hate, then you need to back it up with real action. As moderators on this website who have dedicated countless hours to keeping this site running, we call on Reddit to take the following steps:
At /AgainstHateSubreddits, we have laid out the many failures of Steve time and again to stand up to white supremacy on this site time and time and time again.
With a website with the impact of Reddit on the broader conversations being held in communities around the world, this website needs real leadership and real action.
We hope that Reddit will not just share empty platitudes — but will take a meaningful stand against hate, and take these recommendations to heart.
This letter is co-signed by more than 200 300 350 430 550 650 800 communities representing well over 200 hundreds of millions of subscribers:

2020.09.25 08:34 otakunopodcast [Information] KLab Games Station Episode 180 SIFAS Global/WW Corner Summary: It's Hot Springs Time!

Sorry for the late post. I was busy doing last minute grinding for the SIF event last night, and then I fell asleep lol

The Next Event is... Hot Springs Nico!! (On Now!)

The next event is "Hot Spring Rhapsody" an Exchange Event featuring UR Nico and SRs Shizuku & Chika is now on!!
Event Cards
Name Rarity Attribute Type Preview
Nico UR Pure Sp LINK
Shizuku SR Smile Vo LINK
Chika SR Cool Sk LINK
In addition, there will be two rounds of event gacha!
Gacha part 1 (on now!)
Name Rarity Attribute Type Preview
Hanamaru UR Cool Sk LINK
Nozomi SR Active Gd LINK
Gacha part 2 (starting 9/26 @ 15:00 JST)
Name Rarity Attribute Type Preview
Kanata UR Natural Gd LINK
Nozomi SR Active Gd LINK
Should you tier and/or pull? In the words of kachx:
The event Nico is a decent SP filler, if your Pure team is weak I would recommend trying to go for an extra copy in tier as her stats are not the worst. The Hanamaru in gacha is also a very strong SP filler who can work great in any Cool team, while the Kanata is really only here to be pretty at most.

Scout Schedules

Honor Scouting -- SetName
Availability: Until DATE
Note: Dates subject to change
Name Rarity Attribute Type Preview
Mari UR Smile Sp LINK
Umi SR Cool Gd LINK
Should you pull? According to kachx:
Mari is a decent SP Voltage booster but her Appeal is not crazy high. She's not a mandatory carry but if you happen to pull her, she's a good addition to a Sp subunit, but not really recommended as primary Smile carry.

Yes, the update is still coming

KLab teased us yet again with more features that will be arriving in the forthcoming app update, including Level Cap Jewels which will let you raise your URs' max levels beyond 100, and the new customizable backgrounds during Live Shows. The update should be coming any day now; their in-game news item says "October" so probably not before the next event (which, judging by the end date of Rhythmic Carnival, will start on September 30.) However I think the update will be coming during the break after the end of the next event.

Riko's and Ruby's birthday messages

We just had Riko and Ruby's birthdays! Be sure and tune into the stream to watch the KGS crew read your birthday messages!

This time, the μ's Crayon and Aqours Cat Café sets will be featured! These boxes will be available 9/30 - 10/4, and contain ONLY the cards from the respective sets.

2020.09.25 03:43 SanderSo47 'The Trial of the Chicago 7' Review Thread

Rotten Tomatoes: 90% (41 reviews) with 7.92 in average rating
Metacritic: 75/100 (21 critics)
As with other movies, the scores are set to change as time passes. Meanwhile, I'll post some short reviews on the movie.
Sorkin has made a movie that's gripping, illuminating and trenchant, as erudite as his best work and always grounded first and foremost in story and character. It's as much about the constitutional American right to protest as it is about justice, which makes it incredibly relevant to where we are today, and to what's at stake in the coming election. The final note of defiance here offers a glimmer of hope for which many of us are starved right now. I'll take it.
-David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
Made by Paramount and tossed to Netflix in the pandemic uncertainty of 2020, “Chicago 7” isn’t exactly a groundbreaking vision, but it’s certainly a passion project of the “they don’t make ‘em like they used to” variety. It could have been made a few years after the Chicago 7 faced their fate and fit its moment, but registers as particularly robust now: Sorkin proves that courtrooms have always been at the mercy of a flawed process, yet subject to moral scrutiny at every turn. A look back at rabble-rousers from another era won’t change the world, but “Chicago 7” is a solid tribute to a few men who realized they could, even when the system they fought for came up short.
-Eric Kohn, IndieWire: B
The trial, as Sorkin presents it, is really about the soul of America — the ability to protest, to question the most fundamental actions of the government. The overlap between the 1968 Chicago protests and the Black Lives Matter protests that have taken place this year is all too obvious. Yet the true parallel, I think, is that “The Trial of the Chicago 7” is really about what it looks like when a society starts to treat people speaking freely as if they were doing something dangerous. The movie reminds you, quite stirringly, that the Chicago 7 weren’t attacking America. They were upholding it.
-Owen Gleiberman, Variety
And leave it to Sorkin — whose only other film as director, “Molly’s Game,” felt prescient in its portrayal of predatory men in Hollywood and beyond — to catch the mood of 2020 with a film he began working on many years beforehand. At a time of so much focus on police brutality, and a time when protest is being demonized as the election approaches, this story set 50 years ago feels oddly, frighteningly vital.
-Steve Pond, The Wrap
While many will draw parallels between scenes involving civil unrest to the events of 2020, the philosophical differences between Hayden and Abbie — cultural versus electoral revolution, respectively — ring closely to the debates raging within progressive politics today, and actually prove more interesting. But how much viewers engage with the “Trial of the Chicago 7” will have more to do with its naturally captivating story, and the comedic dialogue, than anything Sorkin as a director provides. But through a punch-the-air final act, one that’s the definition of defiance, Sorkin’s melodrama reassures us of the power of sticking to one’s beliefs.
-Robert Daniels, The Playlist: B-
Aaron Sorkin is at his most portentous with this inert film, stuffed with stars, which mislocates the point of the trial it dramatises
-Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian: 2/5
The script saves some of its most fiery material for them, the kind of thunderbolt Sorkin-isms that land with a satisfying crack. Though it allows them to inhabit quieter moments, too, and the movie is at its best when it roots itself in the real consequences of the case — not only for the men involved, but for a nation increasingly unable to bridge its most painful divides. In that, Chicago 7 frames the past not just as entertaining prologue but a living document; one we ignore at our own peril.
-Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly: B
The question of how we approach protest is an important one because it needs to be ingrained into our daily lives. I think even Sorkin would agree that our institutions have become infected with bad actors who seek to turn those institutions against the people they were meant to protect. “Protests are good” is a fine sentiment, but the culture is already there, and while Chicago 7 acknowledges that these protests will have internal conflict and face external violence, there needs to be more recognition that something has truly rotted America. Sorkin’s faith in institutions has clearly chipped away, but The Trial of the Chicago 7 shows he’s uncertain about what should go in its place.
-Matt Goldberg, Collider: B-
Certain events are rearranged from the factual timelines, and yes, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” exercises poetic license. This is not a documentary; it’s a dramatization of events that resonates with great power while containing essential truths, and it’s one of the best movies of the year.
-Richard Roeper, The Chicago Sun Times: 4/4
For a time, Steven Spielberg was attached to direct The Trial Of The Chicago 7, and his absence is felt in the televisual staging: For all the sentimental uplift of this film’s closing minutes, Sorkin lacks the master’s skill — flaunted in Lincoln and The Post — at enlivening gabby civics lessons. The film could have used some of Spielberg’s craft and twinkly open-hearted conviction... or, perhaps conversely, more of Hoffman’s radical, down-with-The-Man sensibility. Ultimately, Sorkin seems less interested in the actual politics of any of his seven than in the way their flipped bird to the establishment facilitates his own taste for zingers, clever comebacks, and grandstanding. Parallels to the present aside, Trial Of The Chicago 7 is ultimately more timeless than timely in its flaws and conventions. Which is to say that some things sadly never go out of fashion, like perversions of justice and eleventh hour surprise witnesses in legal dramas.
-A.A. Dowd, The A.V. Club: C+
Language is Sorkin’s power, and it’s easy to see what drew him to this project: language is what gives the characters here their power as well. And while there are moments that sound like Sorkin is preaching to the choir, there’s a great emphasis on the words the characters use, and how those words either get them in trouble, or ultimately give them strength. From a movie-making perspective, The Trial of the Chicago 7 is sturdy but not particularly revelatory. But as a delivery system for great performers rattling off great dialogue, it’s almost unbeatable.
-Chris Evangelista, /FILM: 7.5/10
While character development is a bit of an issue with so many personalities rioting, arguing and bantering, it doesn’t impede the thought-provoking nature of “Chicago 7” or parallels that Sorkin draws between the ‘60s and now – and without a bunch of narrative gymnastics. The filmmaker crafts an entertaining, immersive and ultimately optimistic spectacle that never forgets, especially at its ending, that humanity should always trump the system.
-Brian Truitt, USA Today: 3.5/4
Unfortunately, the film has relatively little of that kind of punchiness. As a director, Sorkin hasn’t yet grasped how to meld personal drama and historical sweep into a cohesive whole. Although the strong cast helps the film through some of its weaker segments, Sorkin’s attempt to bring a Spielbergian fluidity to the flashbacks to convention riot chaos often fall flat. But while The Trial of the Chicago 7 ends on something of a movie-of-the-week note, given the timing of its release as a current Department of Justice gins up spurious charges against political enemies, it nevertheless carries a certain past-is-prologue immediacy.
-Chris Barsanti, Slant: 2.5/4
“The Trial of the Chicago 7” offers an absorbing account, in some ways alarming and in some ways reassuring, of an earlier moment of polarization and violent conflict. It isn’t just like now, but the analogies are enough to get you thinking about what happens in a democracy when state power confronts popular dissent. A loud, chaotic mess. A tragedy and a farce. And that’s if we’re lucky.
-A.O. Scott, The New York Times
PLOT
Based on the story of the Chicago Seven, a group of seven defendants charged by the federal government with conspiracy in 1969 and 1970, inciting to riot, and other charges related to anti-Vietnam War and countercultural protests that took place in Chicago, Illinois, on the occasion of the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

2020.09.25 02:23 ArcaneTrickster87 [33M] Seeking a younger Robin to my Batman!

Hello everyone! Thank you for checking out this post! It's gonna be a bit on the lengthy side, so bear with me!
So, full disclosure, I suffered from a few different health problems for most of my life - which unfortunately included pretty nasty depression. So, as a result, I never really put myself out there or looked for any kind of relationship, because I was so sure I'd fail and I wasn't worth loving. After a few years of bettering my life and mindset, and discovering some other health conditions during the Covid lockdown and finally tackling those, I've pretty much transformed into a completely different person. I'm optimistic, happy, outgoing... I even look a lot different, as one of the health issues I'm in the process of overcoming was a jaw disorder. Spending so much of my life in a depressed, miserable hole has really helped me to appreciate my new, happier mindset, and I now do everything I can to spread joy and help other people out of similar holes.
The one problem in my life now.... well, I'm a 33-year-old virgin who has only been on a few dates in my life. I always avoided situations and people that could potentially lead to a relationship, and I'm trying to finally put myself out there and find that special someone I've always wanted. They say you need to love yourself before you can love another person, and I'm finally in a position where I feel ready to love someone.
So, some stuff about me! I am a huge comic book geek. My life's great obsessions are Batman, Power Rangers, and Disney. I have a very close, tight-knit group of friends, and before Covid struck we used to get together 2-3 times a week - but, alas, a lot of them have health issues (asthma, diabetes, etc) so lately we've been doing Zoom calls and such instead and I really miss them. We mainly play board/video games together, and are actually right about to start a new Dungeons & Dragons-esque campaign where we're playing as our own custom team of Power Rangers. Super excited about that.
For almost two years, I've been working for a non-profit organization that works with kids, and I absolutely love it. I've really found my calling and I LOVE being a mentor figure, and I have a promotion coming up when one of my bosses retires in a few months, so there's that. For 8 years before this, I was a manager at a grocery store, and I was absolutely miserable there. All I saw was the worst of human nature, and working with kids and families has shown me nothing but the BEST of human nature. I really needed that change.
I watch a lot of shows and movies, read a lot of books and comics, I'm also actually in the process of writing a novel. Some varied interests of mine include Spider-Man, The Flash, Mario, Kirby, Star Wars, Dragon Ball, Game of Thrones, Futurama... I can honestly go on all day JUST listing nerdy stuff I like haha. Individuality is really important to me - I try to wear clothes, decorate my car, etc in ways that show off my personality and interests. I'm the type of person who dances down the aisles of the grocery store. "Normal" people are boring!
I've always been attracted to younger, slimmer guys. I'll admit I would like a guy that is more on the submissive side, but despite the culture here, I feel creepy calling myself a 'Daddy', especially considering I work with kids. I am a bigger guy (but losing weight fast with my health issues under control!), and I did post a before/after picture of me dealing with my jaw disorder a few months ago if you're interested in seeing what I look like. I enjoy being a mentor and authority figure, and could see myself being very happy in a relationship where I can take on those roles for someone. Clearly I need to take after my favorite superheroes and get myself a sidekick! Ideally, I'd like to find a guy that is generally optimistic and upbeat, that I can have fun with and be myself with. I spent way too much of my life depressed and miserable, and want someone who can help me stay positive and loving life like I am now. I'm a pretty chill, fun guy, and I'd like to keep it that way haha. We should be a united front, us taking on the world together!!
All of that is just my ideal, though, so if you're at all interested in me, please reach out even if you're not exactly the person I'm describing! I live in the United States - New York state, near Niagara Falls, but I'm pretty open to a long-distance thing in the age of Covid and social distancing, as long as it doesn't STAY long-distance forever. Sooner or later, I'd like to close the gap between us and have a future together.
Since I've kept people at an arm's length for so long, I am VERY new to relationships, sex, flirting, stuff like that, so I apologize in advance for how horribly awkward I'll inevitably be. But that doesn't mean I don't want any of that. Be patient with me and I'll definitely get better as I get more comfortable with you. Thank you for reading this wall of text, and if you're at all interested, please don't hesitate to shoot me a message!

2020.09.25 00:28 5_believers 34 [M4F] Cambridge -- Irish Scientist Seeks COVID FWBs

Hello! I'm looking some dates -- socially distanced at first but eventually not, if we click.
I'm 34, 5'9", Irish (w/ cute accent), and I'm a researcher in physics. I'm generally pretty friendly and outgoing, I play a couple of different instruments, and I love listening to music and going to shows. (Well, I used to love going to shows, before you-know-what.) I run and work out regularly, I like to read, and I work on various kinds of side projects geared towards communicating science to the general public. I'm in a long term open/poly relationship with a lovely lady in who splits her time between here and New York City (or used to, before you-know-what). Basically, I have a life partner already, I'm open to any other kind of relationship that we might develop, and I'd prefer something long term.
With regard to sex, I'm fairly-to-very dominant, depending on the partner. I enjoy bondage, spanking, rough sex, threesomes, and (with a few exceptions) whatever turns you on! It's not a problem if you're new to any of the above -- in fact, based on past experience, I find that dynamic pretty sexy. (People have mentioned I have a “young professor” vibe...)
[Here](www.dropbox.com/sh/8s1m51swc3yb10u/AADusJHN_Dsm0atl8O4ddlVRa?dl=0) are some SFW photos of me. I'm looking for someone D&D free, generally a nice person, etc. If you think we might get along, pm me with some details about yourself!
p.s. I'm happy to take things slow because of COVID, but FWIW I get tested every week for work.

2020.09.24 22:04 Gingerroot966 Yet Another Opinion Piece Pushed Under The Notion Of Objective Journalism In The NY Times. Durham’s Investigation Into the Origins Of The “Russia Investigation” Might Actually Have Some Teeth....The Clintons Are Under Scrutiny

The NY Times had another opinion piece trotted out as objective journalism today.
The full article is copy and pasted at the end of this post.
As someone who closely followed the “Russia hysteria” since late 2016 I wasn’t expecting much from John Durham’s investigation into the origins of the “Russia investigation.” Durham was the one who investigated the CIA and its torture tapes and criminal activities for years only to capitulate and to let the CIA off the hook, even after the CIA and then head of the CIA John Brennan was caught spying on the US Intelligence Committee in an attempt to control the narrative. John Brennan lied before Congress, on video, and has never been prosecuted. And who is the current head of the CIA? Gina Haspel, the very person who personally illegally destroyed all of the CIA’s torture tapes.
In this NY Times article you can see in plain sight one of the tactics the MSM employs, framing the narrative and putting the potential reader into a desired perspective based on opinions and anything but just the facts, mam.
From the article: “From the beginning, John H. Durham’s inquiry into the Russia investigation has been politically charged.
Has it or is that how you are attempting to frame it now since it looks like Durham might actually do something, unlike with his investigation into CIA torture?
President Trump promoted it as certain to uncover a “deep state” plot against him, Attorney General William P. Barr rebuked the investigators under scrutiny, and he and Mr. Durham publicly second-guessed an independent inspector general and traveled the globe to chase down conspiracy theories.
Barr and Durham released statements public about the Inspector General’s Report—which revealed clear bias and illegality within the “Russia investigation” and in how FISA warrants were obtained and renewed—and stated that they had more power than the Inspector General had in order to obtain documents and subpoena and tap into intelligence. The Inspector General didn’t and doesn’t have the power that John Durham has to interview overseas intel assets and to procure documents from intelligence agencies, at home and abroad. They made it clear that they had found substantially more than the Inspector General had because of that power. That’s all.
And how can one frame Durham and Barr going overseas to look into Joseph Misfud as chasing “conspiracy theories” when the findings and evidence and conclusion of the investigation has yet to be settled? The FBI used Misfud to in an attempt to entrap George Papadopoulos—by supposedly telling him that potential dirt and emails on Hillary Clinton were available—along with another asset of theirs, Alexander Downer, who then inquired if Papadopoulos had heard about any potential damaging info about the Clintons that Papadopoulos had heard about. The FBI used Misfud to feed Papadopoulos the bare bones info and then used Downer to get said info out of Papadopoulos, in order to give the appearance that Papadopoulos had real info and was working with the Russians. Then the FBI attempted to further seal the deal by throwing money at him and then waiting for him to land at an airport in the US when Papadopoulos reentered the country, expecting him to have the money on him, thus getting him on tax evasion and money laundering. Instead he had left the money overseas with his lawyer.
The FBI had nothing on Papadopoulos and yet what did they finally get him on? Misremembering the exact day of the week that he had met with Misfud. That’s it.
The exact same level of entrapment was attempted with the now infamous “Trump Tower Meeting” in summer of 2016 with Don Jr and others with a Russian lawyer, who come to find out was only allowed into the US because Obama’s State Department gave her a pass in order to do so. The same lawyer from Russia who had worked for years previously with Fusion GPS, the same firm tasked and paid for through lawyers by the DNC and Clinton Campaign to gather dirt on the Trump Campaign. The same lawyer who met with the head of Fusion GPS, Glenn Simpson, the day BEFORE and the day AFTER the infamous “Trump Tower Meeting.” The same Fusion GPS which was paying a former UK spy, Christopher Steele, to manufacture the “Trump Dossier.”
But now we know that in January 2017 the FBI knew that Steele’s main source for the info in the Dossier discredited it and that Misfud in a February 2017 interview with the FBI stated that he never discussed anything about emails or Hillary Clinton with Papadopoulos. We now know that the FBI in 2017 had doctored emails sent to them by the CIA which stated that Carter Page had worked with the CIA as an intel asset for years, all in order to keep the FISA warrant on Page alive. The person in the FBI who doctored the emails in order for the FISA warrant to be renewed just pleaded guilty.
And ZERO of the above are conspiracy theories but verifiable fact.
In the Russia investigation, F.B.I. officials did take aggressive steps such as obtaining a secret wiretap to eavesdrop on a former Trump adviser. But they also moved quietly, deploying informants and an undercover agent in part to keep the existence of the investigation from becoming public and affecting the 2016 election.
From 2017 to 2019 those in the MSM vehemently denied any and all assertions that spies and assets were used against the Trump Campaign. Now they quietly admit it and attempt to brush it aside as routine.
Mr. Barr has repeatedly attacked the Russia inquiry as Mr. Durham has investigated it, calling it “one of the greatest travesties in American history” and ignoring a policy that generally prohibits the department from making public statements about current investigations.
I’m not a fan of Barr but what he said rings true. I was a Bernie Sanders supporter in 2016 and this year. I decried police and the feds beating back protestors and journalists from the front of the White House so Trump could walk across the street for a photo op in front of a church. I didn’t vote for Trump and honestly don’t like him. But the truth is the truth regardless of political leanings.
The then current White House and political party in power using the state surveillance apparatus to spy and entrap the other political party’s campaign is a travesty. Obama wanted to stand there during the inauguration with a big smile on his face knowing that he was walking out the door while sticking a foot out to trip up the next person walking in.
But the book caught the attention of F.B.I. agents, who viewed some of its contents as additional justification to obtain a subpoena for foundation records.
Top officials in Justice Department criminal division denied a request in 2016 from senior F.B.I. managers in Washington to secure a subpoena, determining that the bureau lacked a sufficient basis for it and that the book had a political agenda, former officials said. The decision frustrated some agents who believed they had enough evidence beyond the book, including a discussion that touched on the foundation and was captured on a wiretap in an unrelated investigation. Now that the Clintons are back in the crosshairs the propaganda and opinion pieces pushed as objective journalism are ratcheting up. It started with Obama’s former Attorney General Eric Holder’s op-ed in the Washington Post at the end of last year, sending veiled threats Durham’s way.
Will Durham bend the knee like he did with his investigation into CIA torture? Is Barr just the government’s “cleanup man” like Harvey Keitel’s character in Pulp Fiction and he’s just leading Trump on?
The full NY Times article to save people from the click and visiting the website:
In Politically Charged Inquiry, Durham Sought Details About Scrutiny of Clintons
John Durham’s team has sought information about the F.B.I.’s handling of the Clinton Foundation investigation, raising questions about the scope of the prosecutor’s review.
WASHINGTON — From the beginning, John H. Durham’s inquiry into the Russia investigation has been politically charged. President Trump promoted it as certain to uncover a “deep state” plot against him, Attorney General William P. Barr rebuked the investigators under scrutiny, and he and Mr. Durham publicly second-guessed an independent inspector general and traveled the globe to chase down conspiracy theories.
It turns out that Mr. Durham also focused attention on certain political enemies of Mr. Trump: the Clintons.
Mr. Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut assigned by Mr. Barr to review the Russia inquiry, has sought documents and interviews about how federal law enforcement officials handled an investigation around the same time into allegations of political corruption at the Clinton Foundation, according to people familiar with the matter.
Mr. Durham’s team members have suggested to others that they are comparing the two investigations as well as examining whether investigators in the Russia inquiry flouted laws or policies. It was not clear whether Mr. Durham’s investigators were similarly looking for violations in the Clinton Foundation investigation, nor whether the comparison would be included or play a major role in the outcome of Mr. Durham’s inquiry. The approach is highly unusual, according to people briefed on the investigation. Though the suspected crimes themselves are not comparable — one involves a possible conspiracy between a presidential campaign and a foreign adversary to interfere in an election, and the other involves potential bribery and corruption — and largely included different teams of investigators and prosecutors, Mr. Durham’s efforts suggest the scope of his review is broader than previously known.
Mr. Durham’s focus on the Clinton Foundation inquiry comes as concerns deepen among Democrats and some former Justice Department officials that his investigation is being weaponized politically to help Mr. Trump. Congressional Democrats last week called on the department’s inspector general to investigate whether Mr. Durham’s review was free from political influence after his top aide abruptly resigned, reportedly over concerns that the team’s findings would be prematurely released before the election in November.
The Clinton Foundation investigation began about five years ago, under the Obama administration, and stalled in part because some former career law enforcement officials viewed the case as too weak to issue subpoenas. Ultimately, prosecutors in Arkansas secured a subpoena for the charity in early 2018. To date, the case has not resulted in criminal charges.
Some former law enforcement officials declined to talk to Mr. Durham’s team about the foundation investigation because they felt the nature of his inquiry was highly unusual, according to people familiar with the investigation. Mr. Durham’s staff members sought information about the debate over the subpoenas that the F.B.I. tried to obtain in 2016 and have also approached current agents about the matter, but it is not clear what they told investigators.
A spokesman for Mr. Durham declined to comment.
“The Clinton Foundation has regularly been subjected to baseless, politically motivated allegations, and time after time these allegations have been proven false,” the foundation said in a statement. Right-wing news media and prominent Republicans have long promoted a narrative that the F.B.I.’s leadership and the Justice Department under the Obama administration were biased in favor of Hillary Clinton. They have accused agents and prosecutors of aggressively investigating Mr. Trump and his associates — ignoring evidence to the contrary — while moving more cautiously on allegations of corruption at the Clinton Foundation and Mrs. Clinton’s use of a private email server to conduct government business while she was secretary of state.
“There was a clear double standard by the Department of Justice and F.B.I. when it came to the Trump and Clinton campaigns in 2016,” said Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, the Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a staunch supporter of Mr. Trump.
Mr. Barr has repeatedly attacked the Russia inquiry as Mr. Durham has investigated it, calling it “one of the greatest travesties in American history” and ignoring a policy that generally prohibits the department from making public statements about current investigations. Mr. Barr’s statements have raised hopes among the president’s supporters that Mr. Durham will unearth evidence of a plot to sabotage Mr. Trump’s campaign and presidency.
So far, only one person has been charged with criminal wrongdoing: Kevin E. Clinesmith, a former F.B.I. lawyer who pleaded guilty to altering an email that investigators relied on to renew an application for a secret wiretap on the former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.
The president and his Republican allies have tried to cast the Clinton Foundation, a philanthropic organization, as corrupt, accusing Mrs. Clinton of taking steps as secretary of state to support the interests of foundation donors. Critics have suggested that she was part of a quid pro quo in which the foundation received large donations in exchange for supporting the sale of Uranium One, a Canadian company with ties to mining stakes in the United States, to a Russian nuclear agency. The deal was approved by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States when Mrs. Clinton was secretary of state under President Barack Obama and had a voting seat on the panel.
The allegations against Mrs. Clinton were advanced in the book “Clinton Cash,” by Peter Schweizer, a senior editor at large at Breitbart News, the right-wing outlet once controlled by Mr. Trump’s former top aide Stephen K. Bannon. The book contained multiple errors, and the foundation has dismissed its allegations.
Some prosecutors at the time felt the book had been discredited.
The decision frustrated some agents who believed they had enough evidence beyond the book, including a discussion that touched on the foundation and was captured on a wiretap in an unrelated investigation. Other F.B.I. officials at the time believed the conversation’s relevance to the foundation case was tenuous at best.
The disagreement erupted anew later in the summer of 2016, when a top Justice Department official suspected that F.B.I. agents in New York were trying to persuade federal prosecutors in Brooklyn to authorize a subpoena after the department’s criminal division officials in Washington had declined such a request. By the time the F.BI. officials revisited the issue, the Justice Department officials were also concerned that serving subpoenas would violate the practice of avoiding such investigative activity so close to an election.
Ultimately, the Clinton Foundation dispute embroiled Andrew G. McCabe, then the F.B.I. deputy director, who was accused of leaking information about the case to a reporter and later lying about it to the Justice Department inspector general. The episode helped prompt Mr. McCabe’s firing in 2018 and a failed effort by the Justice Department to prosecute him. The foundation case — which had been spread among F.B.I. field offices in New York, Los Angeles, Washington and Little Rock, Ark. — sputtered until Mr. Trump was elected. In early 2018, Patrick C. Harris, a career prosecutor in Little Rock, issued a grand jury subpoena for foundation records, two former law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation said.
A foundation official confirmed that the charity was served with a subpoena and complied with the request for information.
Republicans in 2017 had called for a second special counsel to investigate the foundation, but Rod J. Rosenstein, then the deputy attorney general, did not believe the scant evidence collected in the case justified one, a person familiar with the matter said. Instead, Jeff Sessions, the attorney general at the time, asked John W. Huber, the U.S. attorney in Utah, to review whether federal law enforcement officials had fully investigated the matter.
Shortly after Mr. Durham began his review, Mr. Barr said in an interview with CBS News in May 2019 that Mr. Huber was winding down his work related to Mrs. Clinton. In January, The Washington Post reported that Mr. Huber’s investigation had ended; its findings were not made public. Mr. Trump later attacked Mr. Huber, accusing him of doing “absolutely NOTHING.”

Black Widow delayed to 2021, pushing back The Eternals and other Marvel movies
In a predictable fashion, Disney is delaying Black Widow to 2021 as the company continues to navigate the current theatrical landscape during the COVID-19 pandemic. This marks the first time since 2009 that a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie hasn’t been released in a calendar year.
Black Widow will now open on May 7th, 2021 — more than one year after it was originally scheduled to be released. Like with other Marvel delays, Black Widow’s new date pushes Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings back from its May 7th, 2021 release date to July 9th, 2021. The Eternals, which was supposed to follow Black Widow is moving from February 12th, 2021 to November 5th, 2021. A number of other Disney films, including West Side Story and The King’s Man, were also moved around as part of the shuffle.

Black Widow follows in Wonder Woman 1984’s footsteps, which Warner Bros. delayed to December 25th from an October 2nd release date in hopes that more theaters would be open and audiences more likely to go. The delays come after Tenet’s lukewarm debut in the US, where it opened to just $20 million earlier this month, largely because theaters in major cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City remain closed.
Warner Bros. sees Tenet’s success as a “long-game,” meaning executives want to wait several weeks before judging the movie’s performance instead of relying on the first few weekends. Still, it’s hard to ignore that an expensive blockbuster film may not achieve the financial success many movie studios need right now. That doesn’t bode well for other studios, especially huge moneymakers like Disney with high budgets and marketing spend.
The House of Mouse has explored a few different options. While movies like Hamilton and Artemis Fowl went to Disney Plus as regular streaming exclusives, Disney also built a new “Premier Access” digital purchase shelf within Disney Plus for Mulan. Disney Plus subscribers could pay an additional $30 to buy Mulan — a $200 million blockbuster originally destined for theaters — on top of their $7 monthly Disney Plus subscription fee to watch the movie. Or they could wait until December 4th when Mulan would become “free” to all Disney Plus subscribers.
It’s unclear just how well Mulan performed, but Disney’s chief financial officer, Christine McCarthy, told a group gathered at the Bank of America Virtual 2020 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference last week that the company is “very pleased” with what it’s seeing. Still, McCarthy and the Disney team are committed to theatrical releases, especially heading into 2021.
“We’ve got a pretty robust slate through 2021,” McCarthy said, as reported by Deadline. “We hope theaters are open, and we hope our films are films that for the people who choose to go to movie theaters, the experience of going to a theater is very different from what you would have at home.”
That makes sense! Disney made $13 billion at the box office in 2019 (thanks in part to Avengers: Endgame). Disney is one of the few studios that can drive people to theaters, and it seemingly has no plans to release all of its $200 million blockbusters on Disney Plus as a Premier Access exclusive — especially if Mulan underperformed. Until consumers are ready to go back to theaters en masse, Disney is going to have to figure out which of its films it wants to save for theatrical releases in 2021 and which ones can go directly to streaming.
“In general, if you look at that research, you’ll generally see that older people are less likely,” McCarthy said, talking about who is more likely to go back to theaters. “Probably younger people — the same people who are doing things we see on the news shows that they probably shouldn’t be doing, and crowding and partying — they’re probably more likely to go to a theater. But would a family with young kids go? Probably not.”

Part 1
Part 2 <-- You are here.
Part 3 [Soon]
Kurt Schwaller, the foremost theoretical physicist of his time and renowned discoverer of the theory of everything, committed suicide at the age forty-two in the humble bedroom of his Swiss home by swallowing sleeping pills. As far as suicides go, it was graceful and considerate. His husband found him peacefully at rest. He left behind no research, no reports and no working hard drives. He was not terminally ill. He died with his boots off but his computer on, and exactly six hours after his death the computer executed its final chronjob, posting a suicide note to his Facebook page. The note was short and cryptic, and the way in which it spoke so purposefully from beyond the grave unnerved me. It ended: “Like Edith Piaf, I regret nothing. This was not inevitable.” Whether he meant his suicide or something more remained unclear.
“Who’s Kurt Schwaller?” Greta asked.
“He was a very smart scientist,” Jacinda said.
The monitor on the wall was playing Spirited Away. Nobody in the room asked the question that was on everybody’s mind. The internet condensed into a cluster of theories, before exploding as a hysterics of trolling and contradictory evidence. Depending on who was speaking, Kurt Schwaller had either been depressed for years or was the most cheerful person in the world. He simultaneously regretted discovering the theory and considered it the best means of keeping human life sustainable. His death was suspicious, tragic, commendable, prophetic. Some said good riddance. Others said their goodbyes. Yet, as a species, we never quite shook the gnawing belief that he indeed knew something that we didn’t, and that that knowledge was what killed him. His mind may have been as hermetically sealed as the wombs of the women around us, but in his death we sensed our own foretold. I was relieved I didn’t have a daughter to explain that to.
By April 15, no opossums had given birth. By itself that’s not a troubling fact. However, the average gestation period of an opossum is 12 to 13 days. Hamsters, mice and wombats follow with gestation periods of around 20 days, then wombats, chipmunks and squirrels. No recorded births of any of these species occurred in April. Physically, their females looked pregnant but that was as detailed as it got: “The specimens display the ordinary symptoms of pregnancy, but they are displaying them in excess of their expected due dates, although they do remain healthy and function comparatively well to their male counterparts.” My wife and I developed a fascination with a particular family of opossums in Ohio that we watched daily via webcam. We gave them names, we pretended to be their voices. Our opossums had adventures, family squabbles and bouts of stress at work. The daughter, Irene, was rebellious. The son, Ziggy, was a nerd. The dad, whom we dubbed Monsieur Charles, sold insurance and the mom, Yvette, worked as stay-at-home technical support for Amazon. We realized right away that we were already preparing for the storytelling phase of parenthood, but we didn’t stop. As uncertain as the future was, the preparation for it was ours and we enjoyed doing it together. Nothing would take that away from us. When I touched my wife’s body in the shower and pressed the palm of my hand against her tummy, it felt no different than it had felt a month before. There was no hardness, no lumps. It seemed unreal that somewhere beneath her skin, for reasons unknown, her body had produced a substance that was impervious to diamond saw blades and precision lasers—a substance that, at least if you believed the rumours, the Russians were already trying to synthesize to use as tank plating.
For the rest of April it rained. Streaks of water ran crookedly down windowpanes, following the laws of physics but just barely. If you stared long enough at the wet glass you forgot there was anything behind it. Eventually, all you saw was your own distorted reflection. I liked when my wife put her arms around me from behind and pressed her chest against my back. I didn’t feel alone.
Pillow started to show her pregnancy in May. The World Health Organization also amended its initial communique, stating that based on the evidence regarding the prolonged gestations of other mammals, it was no longer able to predict an influx of human births in late December. If mice and gerbils weren’t birthing as predicted, humans might not either. However, the amendment stated, preparations were still proceeding along a nine month timeline, and they were ahead of schedule. When the BBC showed field hospitals in South Sudan, I wondered what the schedule entailed because the images were of skeletal tent-like buildings that despite their newness already had the aura of contamination. My wife said it was naive to expect the same medical standards in developing countries as in developed ones. Perhaps she was right. The BBC repeated the platitude that there wasn’t enough money for everyone, listed the foreign aid and private funds that had come in, and interviewed a tired young doctor who patiently answered questions while wiping sweat from his eyebrows. The United States Supreme Court issued an injunction against the New York Time’s theory of everything evaluation website based on a barrage of challenges from corporations that claimed the website violated their intellectual property. Another website sprang up overnight in Sweden, anonymous and hosted from compact discs. Salvador Abaroa announced a free Tribe of Akna gathering at Wrigley Field. Bakshi called. He and Jacinda had argued, and she’d taken Greta and their car and driven to the gathering in Chicago. We watched it on television. Salvador Abaroa banged his gong and advanced his theories. The world was made of squiggles, not lines, and all this time we’d only been approximating reality in the way an mp3 file approximates sound waves, or the way in which we approximate temperature, by cutting it into neat and stable increments that we mistake as absolutes. Zurich opened its arms for Kurt Schwaller’s funeral, which was interrupted by a streaker baring the logo and slogan of a diaper company. Police tackled the streaker and—for a moment—the mourners cheered. Later, an investigation of Kurt Schwaller’s Dropbox account performed in the name of international security revealed that he had deleted large amounts of files in the days leading up to his suicide. The Mossad, Bakshi told me, had been secretly monitoring Kurt Schwaller for at least the past two years because of his Palestinian sympathies and were now piecing together his computer activities by recreating his monitor displays from the detailed heat signatures they’d collected. The technology was available, Bakshi assured me. It was possible. I was more worried when Ziggy the Ohioan opossum injured his left leg. “Oh my God, what happened?” Yvette asked when she saw his bandaged limb. “You told me to be more physically active, so I tried out for the soccer team, mom,” he answered. “Did you make the team?” My wife’s breath smelled like black coffee. “No, but I sure broke my leg.” After pausing for some canned laughter, Yvette waddled obligingly toward Ziggy. “Well, you should at least have some of my homemade pasta,” she said. I made eating noises. “Do you know why they call it pasta, mom?” My wife turned from the monitor to look at me. “I don’t,” she said in her normal voice. “Because you already ate it,” I said. We laughed, concocted ever sillier plot lines and watched the webcam late into an unusually warm May night.
In June, I returned to work and Pillow joined the list of pregnant mammals now past their due dates. She ate and drank regularly, and other than waddling when she walked she was her old self. My wife started to show signs of pregnancy in June, too. It made me happy even as it reinforced the authenticity of the coming known unknown, as a former American Secretary of Defense might have called it. My wife developed the habit of posing questions in pairs: do you love me, and what do you think will happen to us? Am I the woman that as a boy you dreamed of spending your life with, and if it’s a girl do you hope she’ll be like me? Sometimes she trembled so faintly in her sleep that I wasn’t sure whether she was dreaming or in the process of waking. I pressed my body to hers and said that I wished I could share the pregnancy with her. She said that it didn’t feel like it was hers to share. She said she felt heavy. I massaged her shoulders. We kept the windows open during the day and the screen mesh out because the insects that usually invade southwestern Ontario in late May and early June hadn’t appeared. Birds and reptiles stopped laying eggs. We luxuriated in every bite of pancake that we topped with too much butter and drowned in maple syrup. We talked openly with our mouths full about the future because the world around us had let itself descend into a self-censoring limbo. The opossum webcam went dark. Bakshi dropped by the apartment one night, unannounced and in the middle of a thunderstorm. There was pain on his face. “What if what Kurt Schwaller meant was that fate was not inevitable until we made it so,” he said, sobbing. “What if our reality was a series of forking paths and by discovering the theory of everything we locked ourselves forever into one of them?” Jacinda had left him. “You’ll get her back,” I said. My wife made him a cup of tea that he drank boiling hot. He put down the cup—then picked it up and threw it against the wall. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I just wanted to see if I could do something that I didn’t really want to do.” I bent down to pick up the broken pieces of porcelain. “You’ll get her back, Bakshi,” my wife said. Rain dripped onto our table from the ends of his black hair. “I don’t think so. I think we’re locked in and Kurt Schwaller took the only way out there is.” We didn’t let him go home. We discretely took all the knives from the kitchen and hid them in our bedroom, and did the same with the medicine in our bathroom, and Bakshi slept on our sofa, snoring loudly. He was still sad in the morning but felt better. We ate scrambled eggs, knowing that unless chickens started laying them again we were having a nonrenewable resource for breakfast.
Time was nonrenewable. My wife and I tried to take advantage of each second. But for every ten things we planned, we only did one. Our ambitions exceeded our abilities. On some days we were inexcusably lazy, lying in bed together until noon, and on others we worked nonstop at jobs like painting the walls, which later seemed insignificant. We considered leaving the city when the smog got too thick and renting a cottage in the country but we didn’t want to be without the safety of the nearness of hospitals and department stores. When we were scared, we made love. We ate a lot. We read short stories to each other. Outside our apartment, the world began to resemble its normal rhythms, with the exception that everywhere you went all the women were visibly pregnant. Some tried to hide it with loosely flowing clothes. Others bared their bellies with pride. I flirted with a supermarket cashier with an Ouroboros tattoo encircling her pierced belly button. After she handed me my change I asked her if she’d had it done before or after March 27. “Before,” she said. “What does it mean?” I asked. “That people have been making up weird shit for a long time and we’re still fucking here.” In Pakistan, the United Nations uncovered a mass grave of girls killed because they were pregnant—to protect the honour of their families. When I was a kid in Catholic school, my favourite saint was Saint Joseph because I wanted to love someone as much as he must have loved Mary to believe her story about a virgin birth.
On July 1, we subduably celebrated Canada Day. On July 4, my wife shook me awake at six in the morning because she was having back spasms and her stomach hurt. She got out of bed, wavered and fell and hit her head on the edge of a shelf, opening up a nasty gash. I helped her to the bathroom sink, where we washed the wound and applied a band-aid. She tried throwing up in the toilet but couldn’t. The sounds of her empty retching made me cold. The cramps got worse. I picked her up and carried her out of the apartment—Pillow whined as I closed the door—and down to the underground garage, where I helped her into the back seat of our car. Pulling out into the street, I was surprised by the amount of traffic. It was still dark out but cars were already barrelling by. On Lake Shore, the traffic was even worse. I turned on the radio and the host was in the middle of a discussion about livestock, so I turned the radio off. Farther in the city foot traffic joined car traffic and the lights couldn’t have changed more slowly. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw women collapsing on the sidewalks, clutching their stomachs. I kept my eyes ahead. At a red light, a black woman kept banging on the passenger’s side door until I rolled down the window. She asked if she could get a ride. I asked to where. “To the hospital, where else?” she said in sing-song Jamaican. I let her in and at the green light stepped as heavily on the gas as I could. In the back seat, my wife’s eyes were barely open. The Jamaican woman was in better shape. Noticing my concern, she said, “Don’t worry yourself none. I was like that this morning, too, but I’m better now. It comes and then it goes.” I was still worried. The streets around the hospital were packed with parked cars, but I found a spot by turning the wrong way up a one way street. The wheel hit the curb. I got out. The Jamaican woman helped me with my wife, and the three of us covered the distance from the car to the hospital in minutes. Ambulance sirens wailed close by. I heard the repetitive thump of helicopter blades. I glanced at my watch. 7:24. In the hospital, the hallways and waiting room were packed. There was standing room only. I left my wife leaning against a sliver of wall and ran to the reception desk. The Jamaican woman had disappeared. When I opened my mouth to speak, the receptionist cut me off: “Just take a seat, Mister, same as everybody else. Stay alert, stay calm. If you need water you can get it down the hall. We’re trying to get as many doctors down here as we can as quickly as we can, but the roads are jammed and there’s more than one hospital. That’s all I’ve been told.” I relayed the information to my wife word for word, once I found her—the waiting room was becoming encrusted with layers of incoming people—and then they shut the hospital doors—and my wife nodded, looking at me with eyes that wanted to close. I kept her lids open with my thumbs. My watch read 7:36. I wanted to tell her I loved her but was stupidly embarrassed by the presence of so many people who might laugh. I didn’t want to be cheesy. “It comes and it goes,” I said, “so just keep your eyes open for me until it goes, please.” She smiled, and I touched my lips to hers without kissing them. Her lips were dry. Around me shouts were erupting. There was a television in the corner of the waiting room, showing scenes of crowded hospitals in Sydney and Paris, and violence in Rio de Janeiro, where families huddled together in the streets while men, young and old, flung rocks, bricks and flaming bottles at a cordon of black-clad BOPE behind which politicians and their families were running from shiny cars to state-run clinics. My wife’s weak voice brought me back to the present. “What do you think happened to Monsieur Charles?” she asked. “I don’t know, but I’d guess he’s probably just getting ready for work now,” I said. She smiled and the pressure on my thumbs increased. Her eyes started to roll back into her head. “Don’t go away,” I said. “Don’t leave me.” I felt her eyes sizzle and shake like frying spheres of bacon. I couldn’t hold them open anymore. I didn’t know what to do. The shouting in the hospital had devolved into chaos. “Do you know why they call it pasta?” I said. I didn’t expect her to answer. I didn’t expect any reaction, but, “Because I already ate it,” she said, smiling—and it was the last thing she ever said, her last smile I ever saw, because in that moment there was a horrible whine that made me press my fists against my ears and in the same instant every woman in the hospital exploded.

Since

Blood, guts and bone shards blanketed the surfaces of the waiting room, making it look like the inside of an unwashed jar of strawberry jam. My wife was gone. Every woman in the room was gone. The space behind the reception desk stood eerily empty. The television in the corner was showing the splattered lens of a camera that a hand suddenly wiped clean—its burst of motion a shock to the prevailing stillness—to reveal the peaceful image of a Los Angeles street in which bloodied men and boys stood frozen, startled…
I was too numb to speak.
Someone unlocked the hospital doors but nobody entered.
The waiting room smelled like an abattoir.
My clothes smelled like an abattoir.
I walked toward the doors, opened them with my hip and continued into the morning sunlight. I half expected shit to rain down from the skies. If I had a razor blade in my pocket I would have slit my wrists, but all I had was my wallet, my car keys and my phone. Sliding my fingers over the keys reminded me how dull they were. I didn’t want to drive. I didn’t want anything, but if I had to do something I would walk. I stepped on the heel of one shoe with the toe of another and slid my shoe off. The other one I pulled off with my hand. I wasn’t wearing socks. I hadn’t had enough time to put them on. I threw the shoes away. I wanted to walk until my feet hurt so much that I couldn’t walk anymore.
I put one foot in front of the other all the way back to my apartment building, waited for the elevator, and took it to my floor. In the hall, I passed a man wearing clean summer clothes. He didn’t give my bloody ones a second glance. I nodded to him, he nodded back, and I unlocked the door to my apartment and walked in. My feet left footprints on the linoleum. A dark, drying stain in the small space between the fridge and the kitchen wall was all that was left of Pillow. She’d squeezed in and died alone. I took out a mop and rotely removed the stain. Then I took off my clothes, flung them on the bed, which was as unmade as when we left it, took a shower and laid down on the crumpled sheets beside the only pieces of my wife that I had left. My sleep smelled like an abattoir.

2020.09.24 19:48 jfp96 Strange NYT review of Live at Leeds

In a 1970 review of Live at Leeds, this New York Times article makes mention of five songs that were not released until the 1995 remix of the album, and says it includes performances captured at Leeds and at Hull:
It was recorded at two con secutive shows in Hull and Leeds, tough Yorkshire towns that have been Who strong holds ever since the days of I can't explain, and features roughly the same act that the group used on its last Ameri can tour, except that it misses out “Tommy,” their opera. Apart from their old hits, “Substitute,” and “Happy Jack” and “I'm a Boy,” “Magic Bus” and “My Gen eration,” there is a John Ent whistle song (“Heaven and Hell”), a couple of songs off past albums (“Tattoo” and “Young Man's Blues”) and three revived rock classics from the fifties (“Fortune Teller,” “Summertime Blues” and “Shakin’ All Over”).
The article is dated March 8, predating the official release date of the album (according to Wikipedia, at least) by over two months; this would've been less than a month after the actual show took place!
What gives?
Were there promotional copies of Live at Leeds given to critics with an expanded tracklist back in the day?
